Fly Niu Airlines
Fly Niu Airlines was an airline based in Tonga. It began and ceased operations in 2004. History The airline was established 2004 as one of a number of services following the collapse of Royal Tongan Airlines. It began operations on 16 June 2004 using a De Havilland Canada Dash 8 flying to Vavaʻu. On 3 August 2004 the Tongan government revoked its air operators certificate after introducing a "one airline" policy on the basis that the country is too small to support more than one domestic airline. The monopoly was then granted to Peau Vavaʻu, owned by then George Tupou V, Crown Prince Tupouto'a. The airline's certificate was reinstated after it obtained a court injunction against the policy, but it was forced to cease operations on 10 September 2004 after the injunction was overturned by Tonga's Supreme Court. Royal Tongan Airlines was the national airline of Tonga until liquidation in 2004. It was a government agency and operated interisland services and international routes. History Formative years In 1983 a feasibility study was undertaken by All Nippon Airways to investigate the setting up of a Tongan airline. It was planned for Friendly Island Airways to begin operations in October 1974, with technical and managerial assistance provided by the Japanese airline, and for the airline to operate a surplus ANA Boeing 737-200. De Havilland Canada Dash 8
The De Havilland Canada DHC-8, commonly known as the Dash 8, is a series of turboprop-powered regional airliners, introduced by de Havilland Canada (DHC) in 1984. DHC was later bought by Boeing in 1988, then by Bombardier in 1992; then by Longview Aviation Capital in 2019, reviving the De Havilland Canada brand. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW100s, it was developed from the Dash 7 with improved cruise performance and lower operational costs, but without STOL performance. Vavaʻu
Vavau is an island group, consisting of one large island ( ʻUtu Vavaʻu) and 40 smaller ones, in Tonga. It is part of Vavaʻu District, which includes several other individual islands. According to tradition, the Maui god created both Tongatapu and Vavau, but put a little more effort into the former. Vavau rises above sea level at Mount Talau. George Tupou V
George Tupou V ( Tongan: Siaosi Tupou, full name: Siaosi Tāufaʻāhau Manumataongo Tukuʻaho Tupou; 4 May 194818 March 2012) was the King of Tonga from the death of his father Tāufaʻāhau Tupou IV in 2006 until his own death six years later. Early life and education Prince Siaosi was born on 4 May 1948, as the eldest child of Crown Prince Tupoutoʻa-Tungī of Tonga (son of Queen Sālote Tupou III and Prince Viliami) and his wife Crown Princess Halaevalu.
