Florida State Road 79
State Road 79 (SR 79) is a north–south highway in the panhandle of Florida. It is a popular route for tourists to and from the Panama City Beach area. The route begins at Alabama State Route 167 at the Alabama–Florida border and runs to its southern terminus at State Road 30 in Panama City Beach, Florida. Currently, the highway is being expanded to four lanes north of Panama City to the junction with Interstate 10. SR 79 is a major hurricane evacuation route from the coastal area. It is one of few designated routes northward between Pensacola and Panama City. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is a decentralized agency charged with the establishment, maintenance, and regulation of public transportation in the state of Florida. The State Highway System of the U.S. state of Florida comprises the roads maintained by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) or a toll authority. The components are referred to officially as state roads, abbreviated as SR. History Prior to the 1945 renumbering, State Roads were given numbers in the order they were added to the system. The 1945 renumbering removed many roads that were never built and added some that had not existed prior to 1945. In 1955, the State Road Department (SRD) slowed the addition of new state roads and began to classify roads into primary, secondary, and local roads. State Road 10 (SR 10), also known as Atlantic Boulevard, is a major east–west state highway in the U.S. state of Florida. Mostly unsigned in favor of U.S. Highway 90, it runs from the Alabama state line (Perdido River) to Atlantic Beach. The only sections that are not signed as US 90 are north of Pensacola, where US 90 uses SR 10A and SR 10 is signed as U.S. Highway 90 Alternate, and east of south Jacksonville, where US 90 uses unsigned SR 212. State Road 277 (SR 277) is a north-south state and county highway in the panhandle in the U.S. state of Florida that extends from State Road 79 (SR 79) in Vernon to U.S. Route 90 (US 90) in Hulaw west of Chipley. SR 277 runs entirely through Washington County, although one of the two county extensions runs through both Washington and Jackson Counties, Most, if not all of the road is a two-lane undivided highway. Between its termini, SR 277 intersects with no state roads other than former ones, and shares a concurrency with at least one of those county roads. Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport is a public airport northwest of Panama City, Florida, United States, in Bay County. The airport is owned by the Panama City-Bay County Airport & Industrial District, and is north of Panama City Beach, near West Bay. It replaced Panama City–Bay County International Airport (Fannin Field, PFN), which was located in Panama City. The airport opened for commercial flights on May 23, 2010, and is the first international airport in the United States designed and built since the September 11 attacks. State Road 30A (SR 30A) is a Florida Department of Transportation designation shared by four alternate routings of SR 30 in the Florida panhandle. Two segments have SR 30A signage; the other two do not as they are segments of U.S. Route 98 (US 98).
