State Road 31 (SR 31) is a state highway in Southwest Florida in Lee County, Florida, Lee, Charlotte County, Florida, Charlotte, and DeSoto County, Florida, DeSoto counties. It is about 36 miles (58 kilometers) long. The entire roadway is two lanes wide, even near Fort Myers, Florida, Fort Myers. The highway crosses the Caloosahatchee River via the Wilson Pigott Bridge, a small Bascule bridge, drawbridge, a mile north of the southern terminus. The northern terminus is with an intersection of Florida State Road 70, SR 70 near Arcadia, Florida, Arcadia. The State Highway System of the U.S. state of Florida comprises the roads maintained by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) or a toll authority. The components are referred to officially as state roads, abbreviated as SR. History Prior to the 1945 renumbering, State Roads were given numbers in the order they were added to the system. The 1945 renumbering removed many roads that were never built and added some that had not existed prior to 1945. In 1955, the State Road Department (SRD) slowed the addition of new state roads and began to classify roads into primary, secondary, and local roads. Primary roads would continue to be state-maintained, while secondary roads would have an S before the number, and would only be state-maintained during a construction project. The Okeechobee Waterway or Okeechobee Canal is a relatively shallow artificial waterway in the United States, stretching across Florida from Fort Myers on the west coast to Stuart on Florida's east coast.
