Florida Stallion Stakes
The Florida Stallion Stakes is an American series of Thoroughbred horse races run annually at Calder Race Course in Miami Gardens, Florida. Created in 1982 to benefit the Florida Thoroughbred breeding industry, it is open to two-year-olds sired by a nominated Florida stallion and raced over three months at increasing distances. In order for a horse to run in the Florida Stallion Stakes series, their sire must have been nominated each year for a set fee which makes all of that stallions' foals eligible to participate. Graduated payments are required over a nineteen-month period in order to maintain the foals' eligibility. In 1984, Smile became the first horse to ever win all three legs of the Florida Stallion Stakes. The Florida Sire Stakes Desert Vixen division is a thoroughbred horse race run annually at Gulfstream Park, in Hallandale Beach, Florida for two-year-old, fillies by FTBOA registered stallions at a distance of six furlongs on dirt. The FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes In Reality division is the fifth leg of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' & Owners' Association (FTBOA) Florida Sire series. It has been run on dirt over a distance of six furlongs since inception. Affirmed Stakes (FS)
The FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Affirmed division is a thoroughbred horse race run annually as the third leg of the (FTBOA) Florida Sire stakes series. Inaugurated in 1983 at Calder Race Course as part of the Florida Stallion stakes series the race was named after the Florida-bred Triple Crown winner Affirmed, who was well known for his rivalry with the west coast-bred Alydar. The race was originally run at 6 furlongs but in its second year was increased to 7 furlongs in order to create a gradually increasing set of lengths throughout the series to allow the young horses to step up to each new length as they moved through their training. The Affirmed Stakes has run in two divisions on four separate occasions (1985–1987 and 2001). The race was discontinued at Calder Race Course in 2012 and taken over by Gulfstream Park in 2013. Smile (horse)
Smile (March 26, 1982 – June 1997) was a Florida-bred racehorse born in 1982. He was sired by the stallion In Reality and was out of the Boldnesian mare Sunny Smile, who also produced the Gr. 2 winner Sunshine Today and the multiple stakes winner Charging Through. Race career Smile started his race career at Calder Race Track in Florida, where he was bred. He was undefeated throughout his two-year-old campaign with wins in the Criterium, Dr. Fager, Affirmed and In Reality Stakes. In his three-year-old season, Smile won in the Carry Back Stakes before moving on to Arlington Park. He placed in the Gr. 2 Sheridan Stakes and came in second to Banner Bob, then won the then-Gr. 1 Arlington Classic. In the Gr. 1 American Derby, Smile came in third behind that year’s Belmont Stakes winner, Creme Fraiche.
