Although Florida seceded there was a pro-Union and anti-Confederate minority in the state, an element that grew as the war progressed. Thus over 2,200 Floridians served in Union units. Battle Of Olustee
The Battle of Olustee or Battle of Ocean Pond was fought in Baker County, Florida on February 20, 1864, during the American Civil War. It was the largest battle fought in Florida during the war. Union General Truman Seymour had landed troops at Jacksonville, aiming chiefly to disrupt Confederate food supply. Meeting little resistance, he proceeded towards the state capital of Tallahassee, against orders, assuming that he would face only the small Florida militia. Confederates in Charleston sent reinforcements under General Alfred H. Colquitt and the two armies collided near Ocean Pond in Olustee. The Union forces were repulsed and retreated to Jacksonville. Marion Light Artillery
The Marion Light Artillery was part of the Confederate Army from Marion County, Florida. Commanding officers included John Marshall Martin. It served as part of the Army of Tennessee. Marion County was home to many residents who relocated from South Carolina in the 15 or so years prior to the American Civil War and was a hotbed of secessionist activity. Organizers petitioned the state to host the Florida Secession Convention. When Martin was seriously wounded at the Battle of Richmond, Colonel S. St. George Rogers took command. Kilcrease Light Artillery
The Kilcrease Light Artillery was a Confederate army artillery company. Headed by Captain Patrick Houston and Captain Frederick L. Villepigue, it was formed in Leon County, Florida in the spring of 1863 upon the dividing of the Leon Light Artillery. The Kilcrease company was assigned to the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, and served at St. Johns Island, South Carolina as well as in the Battle of Natural Bridge. The Kilcrease company was also stationed in various locations in Florida. The company was included in the surrender at Tallahassee, Florida, on May 10, 1865. 1st Florida Special Cavalry Battalion
The 1st Florida Special Cavalry Battalion, nicknamed Cow Cavalry, was a Confederate States Army cavalry unit from Florida during the American Civil War. Commanded by Charles James Munnerlyn; it was organized to protect herds of cattle from Union raiders. The hides and meat from Florida cattle was a critical supply item for the Confederacy. James McKay wrote to the state of the need to protect Florida cattle after the Battle of Olustee, and a group of Florida crackers was organized near Plant City, and were based out of Fort Myers, taking part in the Battle of Fort Myers. George Washington Scott
George Washington Scott (February 22, 1829 – October 3, 1903) was a noted Florida and Georgia businessperson, education philanthropist, former planter, and former military officer in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. Biography Scott was born in Alexandria, Pennsylvania, and was the 4th child of Agnes Irvine and John Scott Sr., both of Irish descent. He became a merchant and farmer in Pennsylvania. In 1850 Scott visited Florida and moved to Quincy, Florida in 1851. In 1852, Scott moved to Leon County, Florida, where he established a mercantile exchange and his George W. Scott Plantation. In 1860 Scott enlisted in the Tallahassee Guards, a Leon County militia organization. Upon the formation of the Confederacy he was appointed Captain of Company D, Second Florida Cavalry. 1st Florida Infantry Regiment
The 1st Florida Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment raised by the Confederate state of Florida during the American Civil War. Raised for 12 months of service its remaining veterans served in the 1st (McDonell's) Battalion, Florida Infantry from April 1862 on. In August the depleted battalion was consolidated with the 3rd (Miller's) Battalion into the reorganized 1st Florida Infantry Regiment again. In December 1862 it merged with the 3rd Florida Infantry Regiment and received the form it kept till the war's end as the 1st and 3rd Consolidated Florida Infantry Regiment. Fighting as part of the Army of Tennessee in the Western Theater of the American Civil War it was surrendered on April 26, 1865.
