Giant Slalom
Giant slalom (GS) is an alpine skiing and alpine snowboarding discipline. It involves skiing between sets of poles ("gates") spaced at a greater distance from each other than in slalom but less than in Super-G. Giant slalom and slalom make up the technical events in alpine ski racing. This category separates them from the speed events of Super-G and downhill. The technical events are normally composed of two runs, held on different courses on the same ski run. Course The vertical drop for a GS course must be for men, and for women. The number of gates in this event is 56–70 for men and 46–58 for women. The number of direction changes in a GS course equals 11–15% of the vertical drop of the course in metres, 13–18% for children. As an example, a course with a vertical drop of would have 33–45 direction changes for an adult race. The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2017 were the 44th FIS Alpine World Ski Championships and were held from 6 to 19 February 2017 at Piz Nair in St. Moritz, Switzerland. The host city was selected at the FIS Congress in South Korea, on 31 May 2012. The other finalists were Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, and Åre, Sweden. FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2015 – Men's Super Combined
The Men's super combined competition at the 2015 World Championships was held on Sunday, February 8. Marcel Hirscher won the gold medal, despite originally finishing in 31st position after the downhill leg. Ondřej Bank however, fell on the final jump and, although the original results had Bank in 25th place, the jury disqualified him after the run ended and as a result, Hirscher was able to start first in the slalom leg instead of starting after the top 30. With a clean track he was able to rise all the way from 30th to 1st. Kjetil Jansrud took silver for Norway after leading the downhill leg. Bronze medalist Ted Ligety commenting on the race conditions and result, said, "It was dumb luck. If I was a half-second faster in the downhill, I wouldn’t have been able to get a medal at all. Alta Badia is a ski resort in the Dolomites of northern Italy, in the upper part of the Val Badia (german: Hochabtei) in South Tyrol. It is part of the Dolomiti Superski ski area. It is included in the territories of the municipalities of Corvara, Badia, and La Val. Centered on Corvara, the extended area's lift-served summit elevation is on the Sella group, with an overall vertical drop of to Pedraces. The native language of the majority of the locals is Ladin.
