Florence Roberts (stage Actress)
Florence Roberts (February 14, 1871 – July 17, 1927) was an American stage actress and the second wife of actor Lewis Morrison. Biography Roberts was born in New York but raised in California and had early success in the San Francisco area beginning in 1889. She performed at the Baldwin Theatre and the Alcazar Theatre often playing Shakespearean parts. In 1905 she toured a play called ''Ana La Mont'' under the management of John Cort.''Who Was Who in the Theatre: 1912 - 1976'', Gale Research Co., 1976, pp. 2040 – 2041, originally published annually by John Parker. She toured plays in the Western United States but seldom to New York. After World War I she toured South Africa in the stage adaptation of '' Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch''. After returning to the United States she appeared in a few silent films then retired. She died in Los Angeles in 1927, aged 56, after emergency surgery. Florence Roberts (March 16, 1861/1864 – June 6, 1940(photo included) was an American actress of the stage and in motion pictures. Stock company actress Born in New York City, she began acting onstage there. Her career began at the Brooklyn Opera House in ''Hoop of Gold''. She secured her first stage role with the Denman Thompson Company and played leads with the N.B. Curtis Company. This experience led to appearances on Broadway. She once starred in ''Zala'', a production of David Belasco. She headed a stock company in Philadelphia, for a period of 15 years. The actress made three world tours in stock. There was a South African repertoire and a tour of Australia with the Henry Duffy players. She also played in stock companies in Boston and other cities. In the early 1900s, she made annual tours under the direction of Frederick Belasco. Film career Roberts' success in motion pictures began with a Mack Sennett comedy. Barbara Jane Bennett (August 13, 1906 – August 8, 1958) was an American stage and film actress and dancer. Family Born in Palisades Park, New Jersey, Barbara Bennett was the second of three daughters born to actor Richard Bennett and his wife, actress Adrienne Morrison. Her maternal grandfather was the stage actor Lewis Morrison. Her older sister Constance and her younger sister Joan had successful film careers. The girls attended the Chapin School with the actress Jane Wyatt. Personal life Bennett married three times and had five children. On January 28, 1929, she married tenor Morton Downey. Mack Sennett
Mack Sennett (born Michael Sinnott; January 17, 1880 – November 5, 1960) was a Canadian-American film actor, director, and producer, and studio head, known as the 'King of Comedy'. Born in Danville, Quebec, in 1880, he started in films in the Biograph Company of New York City, and later opened Keystone Studios in Edendale, California in 1912. Keystone possessed the first fully enclosed film stage, and Sennett became famous as the originator of slapstick routines such as pie-throwing and car-chases, as seen in the Keystone Cops films. He also produced short features that displayed his Bathing Beauties, many of whom went on to develop successful acting careers. Sennett's work in sound movies was less successful, and he was bankrupted in 1933. In 1938 he was presented with an honorary Academy Award for his contribution to film comedy. Olga Isabella Nethersole, CBE, RRC (18 January 1866 – 9 January 1951) was an English actress, theatre producer, and wartime nurse and health educator. Career Olga Isabella Nethersole was born in London, of Spanish descent on her mother's side. Her step-father was Henry Nethersole, a solicitor. She made her stage début at Theatre Royal, Brighton in 1887. In 1888, Nethersole began playing important parts in London, at first under Rutland Barrington and John Hare at the Garrick Theatre. Nethersole toured Australia and the United States playing leading parts in modern plays, notably Clyde Fitch's '' Sapho'', where she and her male costar Hamilton Revelle were arrested for "violating public decency" for which she was later acquitted. Her powerful emotional acting, however, made a great effect in some other plays, such as ''Carmen'', in which she again appeared in America in 1906. ''Sapho'' is a lost 1913 silent film feature drama directed by Lucius Henderson and is based on the novel by Alphonse Daudet and Adolphe Belot. It stars stage actress Florence Roberts and Shelley Hull. It was produced by the Majestic Motion Picture Company and released by World's Special Films. As with '' Queen Elizabeth(1912)'' and ''Resurrection(1912)'', the film was one of the first features to star a major actress known by name. It competed with a four-reel French film that same year, 1913.
