Florence Nature Preserve
Florence Nature Preserve is a publicly-accessible privately owned park in Gerton, Henderson County, North Carolina in the United States. The park is located southeast of Asheville, North Carolina, and is owned and managed by Conserving Carolina, a land trust. Early park development The preserve was named after Dr. Tom and Glenna Florence, who donated the land that makes up the preserve. 300 acres were donated to Conserving Carolina, then known as the Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy, in 1996, which was the first property that the land trust owned. The Florence couple went on to donate an additional 300 acres in 2001. Conserving Carolina adopted and improved nearly five miles of existing trails and has opened the land to the public as the Florence Nature Preserve. Conserving Carolina
Conserving Carolina is a non-profit conservation movement, conservation organization working to preserve water and land resources in Western North Carolina. Conserving Carolina was created in July 2017, from a merger of two previously separate organizations, Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy and Pacolet Area Conservancy. The combined organization maintains a primary office in Hendersonville, NC and a regional office in Columbus, NC. Gerton, North Carolina
Gerton is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 254. It is part of the Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The area was first connected by a Drovers' road, a natural access into the interior of the Blue Ridge Mountains for drovers who were moving livestock, mostly flocks of turkeys and some geese, herds of hogs and some cattle in and out of the mountains to the markets. Established in 1798, it connected the area with Asheville, following on what is today U.S. Route 74A (US 74A). In 1883 the "Pump" Post Office was opened, named after a pump that supplied water off Bearwallow Mountain to the community in the valley. Chimney Rock State Park
Chimney Rock State Park is a North Carolina state park in Chimney Rock, Rutherford County, North Carolina in the United States. Hickory Nut Gorge State Trail
Hickory Nut Gorge State Trail is a unit of the North Carolina state park system in Rutherford, Buncombe, and Henderson Counties, North Carolina in the United States. The State Trail is planned as a continuous loop for hikers around Hickory Nut Gorge. DuPont State Forest
DuPont State Recreational Forest, commonly known as DuPont Forest, is a state forest, located in Henderson and Transylvania counties of North Carolina. The name originates from the fact that the DuPont company arranged the sale of the original tract to the state. Adjacent tracts have since been purchased and added to the state forest. Portions of the forest formerly contained a manufacturing facility for the production of X-ray film. The forest was used to shoot scenes from the 1992 film '' The Last of the Mohicans'' as well as the 2012 box office hit '' The Hunger Games''.
