Florence Cayford
Dame Florence Evelyne Cayford (14 June 1897 – 25 February 1987) was a Labour politician in London. From 1937 to 1965, Cayford served as a member of Hampstead Borough Council, leading the Labour group from 1945 to 1958. She sat an alderman on the London County Council, and later as a Shoreditch and Finsbury county councillor. She served as chair of the council in 1960. She continued as a councillor on the newly formed London Borough of Camden from 1964, serving as Deputy Mayor from 1967 to 1968, and Mayor from 1968 to 1969, and represented Islington on the Greater London Council from 1964 to 1967. In the 1965 Birthday Honours, she was appointed Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (DBE) for "political and public services". Sidney Barton (politician)
Sidney James Barton (5 March 1909 – 20 January 1986) was a British politician and trade unionist. Barton grew up in Wandsworth before becoming a laboratory technician with the Metropolitan Asylums Board. He joined the National Union of Public Employees (NUPE), and began working full-time for the union in 1934. He also joined the Labour Party, and in 1945 was elected to both Surrey County Council and the Municipal Borough of Sutton and Cheam, serving a single term on each. In 1952, he was elected as vice-chair of the London Trades Council, eventually becoming chair in 1970. In 1950, Barton was elected to the executive of the London Labour Party. In 1953, he was appointed to London County Council, as an alderman, and he was Chairman of London County Council in 1959/1960. Harold Shearman
Sir Harold Charles Shearman (14 March 1896 – 24 March 1984) was a British socialist politician and educationalist, who served as chair of both the London County Council and Greater London Council. Shearman attended Sulgrave National School, then Magdalen College School, Brackley, Wolsingham Grammar School, and finally St Edmund Hall, Oxford, from which he graduated with a first-class honours degree in modern history. In 1912, he became an elementary school teacher in Durham, but he left in 1915 to serve in World War I. He first served with the Royal Army Medical Corps, and then with the Royal Air Force, within which he was a flying officer (observer). After the war, Shearman became active in the Labour Party, and at the 1922 UK general election, he unsuccessfully contested the Isle of Wight. List Of Chairmen Of The London County Council
This is a list of persons who held the offices of chairman, vice chairman and deputy chairman of the London County Council. All three offices existed from 1889 to 1965. Background The chairmanship and vice chairmanship were statutory offices created by the Local Government Act 1888. Both of these positions were generally filled by members of the majority party. The chairman chaired meetings of the council, and was the county's civic leader, filling a similar role to the mayor of a borough or city. The vice chairman performed these functions in his or her absence. As part of the celebrations of the silver jubilee of George V in 1935 it was announced that the chairman would in future be entitled to use the style "right honourable", an honour already enjoyed by the Lord Mayor of London. Webheath
Webheath is a district of Redditch, in Worcestershire, England. The district neighbours Batchley, Headless Cross and the village of Callow Hill. It is also near Feckenham and Astwood Bank. Webheath used to be a village but has recently been swallowed up and now comes under the town of Redditch. Residents of Webheath have recently (2012) been alarmed by proposals to build hundreds of extra houses on nearby greenbelt land. The local infrastructure around schools and roads is of great concern. Access to the proposed site is currently very restricted and is only by minor roads. Webheath has one Post Office, 2 pubs, The Rose and Crown and The Foxlydiate Inn which is also a Premier Hotel. There is also a Village Hall and a local grocery store, Biddles. Schools Webheath has two first schools, both are located on Downsell Road.
