Florence Cane (September 28, 1882 – 1952) was a notable American art educator whose ideas influenced the field of art therapy. Personal life Florence was born in 1882 to Max and Theresa Naumberg in 1882 in New York City. She was the second oldest of four children, and was described as having an outgoing and lively disposition. Her sister Margaret Naumburg was a pioneer of American art therapy. Growing up, Cane was exposed to bad art instruction, which inspired her to become an art teacher. Florence married Melville Cane and had twin daughters Katherine and Mary.Cane experienced discrimination, which led her to join women's rights groups. Her husband was supportive of her intellectual and social reform interests. She died in 1952 at the age of 70. Margaret Naumburg
Margaret Naumburg (May 14, 1890 – February 26, 1983) was an American psychologist, educator, artist, author and among the first major theoreticians of art therapy. She named her approach dynamically oriented art therapy. Prior to working in art therapy, she founded the Walden School of New York City. Life and work Naumburg finished undergraduate studies at Vassar and Barnard colleges in New York. She did graduate work at Columbia University with John Dewey in education and at the London School of Economics and Oxford. While in Italy she studied child education with Maria Montessori.Cane, K. Melville Henry Cane
Melville Henry Cane (April 15, 1879 – March 10, 1980) was an American poet and lawyer. He studied at Columbia University, and was the author of the influential book, ''Making a Poem'' (1953). Early life and education As a Columbia University student in 1900, Cane worked as a reporter at the ''New York Evening Post'' and also wrote poetry. He also co-wrote the 1900 Varsity Show at Columbia, writing lyrics for libretto ''The Governor's Vrouw'' (1900), a two-act comic opera he co-wrote with Henry Sydnor Harrison, while John Erskine write the music. Cane earned his law degree in 1903 and later specialized in copyright law. Career Cane was a legal counsel to notable writers like Sinclair Lewis, Upton Sinclair, Ayn Rand, William Saroyan, and Thomas Wolfe and also served on the board of directors for Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Inc. __NOTOC__ Walden School was a private day school in Manhattan, New York City, that operated from 1914 until 1988, when it merged with the New Lincoln School; the merged school closed in 1991.
