Flordon Railway Station
Flordon railway station served the village of Flordon, Norfolk. It was opened in 1849, when the line from London Liverpool Street to Norwich Victoria was constructed; the station was served by Eastern Union Railway stopping services between Norwich and Ipswich. It was closed in 1966, as a result of the Beeching Axe, along with other smaller stations between Norwich and Ipswich. Flordon
Flordon is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. The village is located south-east of Wymondham and south-west of Norwich. History Although the certain meaning of Flordon's name is uncertain, it is of Anglo-Saxon origin and directly translates from Old English as 'floor hill'. In the Domesday Book, Flordon is listed as a settlement of 48 households in the hundred of Humbleyard. In 1086, the village was part of the East Anglian estates of Bishop Odo of Bayeux, Alan of Brittany, Roger Bigod and Godric the Steward. Flordon Mill stood in the village from the medieval period until its demolition in the 1920s. The mill was powered by water and stood on a small tributary of the River Tas. Flordon Hall is a timber framed, seventeenth century manor-house that was built on the ruins of an earlier building. The Beeching cuts (also Beeching Axe) was a plan to increase the efficiency of the nationalised railway system in Great Britain. The plan was outlined in two reports: ''The Reshaping of British Railways'' (1963) and ''The Development of the Major Railway Trunk Routes'' (1965), written by Richard Beeching and published by the British Railways Board. Forncett Railway Station
Forncett railway station was a railway station in Forncett, South Norfolk located 104 miles from London Liverpool Street. It was opened in 1849 when Norwich and Ipswich were connected by the Eastern Union Railway in 1849. Between 1881 and 1951 it was a junction for a short route to Wymondham and was closed as a result of the Beeching Axe with other smaller stations between Norwich and Ipswich. Description (post 1881) The station consisted of two platforms with the up (to London) platform being 363 feet and the down (from London) platform 452 feet. The station building was situated on the up side with a wooden waiting shelter located on the down. The two platforms were linked by a footbridge provided in 1882. A goods yard consisting of three sidings and a brick goods shed was located south of the station on the up side. Swainsthorpe Railway Station
Swainsthorpe was a railway station in Swainsthorpe, England, around five miles south of Norwich. It was opened in 1850 when the Great Eastern Railway constructed the line between London and Norwich. It was the first station south of the terminus at Norwich Victoria. It was well served, in 1889 there were eight trains each way on weekdays. Journey time into Norwich was approximately nine minutes. Norwich Victoria was a railway station in Norwich in Norfolk and the former terminus of the Great Eastern Main Line. There were at one time three railway stations in Norwich, the others being Norwich City and Norwich Thorpe. Currently, only the former Thorpe station, now known simply as "Norwich", remains in use. Opening The station was opened by the Eastern Union Railway (EUR), with regular passenger services commencing on 12 December 1849. The booking hall of the station had once housed a circus which formed an entertainment centre known as Ranelagh Gardens. The circus on the site had been operated by a Spanish-sounding gentleman named Pablo Fanque (in reality a Mr Darby from Norwich) and when the EUR purchased the site they then sold the various circus fittings.
