Flint Public Library
The Charles Flint Public Library is the public library of Middleton, Massachusetts, USA. It is located in a Richardsonian Romanesque building at 1 South Main Street in the center of the town. The building, the only Romanesque building in Middleton, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. Description and history The Flint Public Library is set on the west side of South Main Street (Massachusetts Route 114) in Middleton's town center. It is a 1-1/2 story brick structure, set on a granite foundation, with a slate hip roof. The front facade is dominated by its entrance at the center, which is outlined in light-colored sandstone. Above this is front-facing gable, whose left side is interrupted by a square tower topped by a pyramidal roof. The tower houses a Howard clock in working condition. Middleton is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,779 at the 2020 census. History Middleton was first settled in 1659, and was officially incorporated in 1728. Prior to 1728 it was considered a part of Salem, and contains territory previously within the limits of Andover, Boxford, and Topsfield. Before European colonial settlement, the area was home to a number of native settlements. The area fell along an ill-defined "border" region between the Massachusett and Pennacook. The tribes in this region generally spoke the Abenaki language, with major local tribes being the Naumkeag and Agawam. Will's Hill in modern-day Middleton was home to a winter village founded by an Algonquin Sachem. Route 114 is a Massachusetts state route that, while essentially a northwest–southeast route, is signed west–east. It runs from Route 28 in Lawrence to its terminus at Route 129 in Marblehead. The route is entirely located in Essex County. Route 114 is not related to Route 114A in Seekonk, which is actually related to Rhode Island Route 114 and is located about away from Massachusetts Route 114. Route description Route 114 begins in Lawrence at Route 28, at the southern end of the O'Leary Bridge. It heads eastward along Merrimack Street before turning southward onto Parker Street, passing Lawrence Station as it does. Donald MacDonald (1841–1916) was a leading stained glass artisan and designer in 19th century Boston. Born Donald McDonald, he altered the spelling of his surname to "MacDonald" around 1877. Early life Born in 1841, the son of a Scottish farmer, in the Gorbals district of Glasgow, MacDonald was trained as a glass painter in London. By 1863, he was a partner in the London firm of McMillan & McDonald of Camden Town, furnishing stained glass for the New Stepney Meetinghouse (destroyed) in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Tower Hamlets district of East London. In 1868, he settled in Boston, probably at the urging of William Robert Ware (1832–1915), founder of the school of architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
