Flint Creek Farm
The Flint Creek Farm is a historic farm in Field Township, Minnesota, United States. From 1915 to 1933 the farm was owned by executives of the area's largest lumber company as a side venture supplying food and hay to the company's lumber camps. Three buildings and a windmill tower are still standing from this period. With Background The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989 as the Flint Creek Farm Historic District for its local significance in the themes of agriculture and industry. It was nominated as one of only two known surviving Minnesota farms established to supply a major lumber company (the other being the Ann River Logging Company Farm in Kanabec County). It was also nominated for its associations with its two owners, influential Virginia and Rainy Lake Lumber Company executives Samuel J. Cusson (c. 1862–1919) and Chester H. Rogers (1866–1933). Lumber Camp
A logging camp (or lumber camp) is a transitory work site used in the logging industry. Before the second half of the 20th century, these camps were the primary place where lumberjacks would live and work to fell trees in a particular area. Many place names (e.g. Bockman Lumber Camp, Whitestone Logging Camp, Camp Douglas) are legacies of old logging camps. Camps were often placed next to river tributaries so that the winter's log harvest could be floated to the lumbermills in the spring. Design The requirements of the logging industry involved the creation of a working site and housing from the pristine wilderness. The construction of the logging camp consisted of a transformation of the natural environment to the built environment. Kanabec County ( ) is a county in the East Central part of U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 16,032. Its county seat is Mora. History The Minnesota legislature authorized creation of Kanabec County on March 13, 1858, with territory partitioned from Pine County. No county seat was designated at that time, and the county organization was not effected at that time. The county name came from the Ojibwe term ''ginebig'', meaning "snake," after the Snake River — ''Kanabecosippi'' (''Ginebigo-ziibi'' in the modern spelling) — which flows through the county.
