"Flies" is a science fiction short story by Isaac Asimov. It was first published in the June 1953 issue of ''Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction'', and later appeared in Asimov's collections '' Nightfall and Other Stories'' (1969). The author's original title for the story was "King Lear, IV, i, 36–37",The reference is to the lines "As flies to wanton boys are we to the gods,— they kill us for their sport." but Anthony Boucher, editor at the time, suggested a different title, which became "Flies". Plot summary A group of former college students meet at a reunion twenty years after graduation and discuss their achievements. Asimov added a brief introduction to each story, explaining some aspect of the story's history and/or how it came to be written. ''King Lear'' is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare. It is based on the mythological Leir of Britain. King Lear, in preparation for his old age, divides his power and land between two of his daughters. He becomes destitute and insane and a proscribed crux of political machinations. The first known performance of any version of Shakespeare's play was on Saint Stephen's Day in 1606. The three extant publications from which modern editors derive their texts are the 1608 quarto (Q1) and the 1619 quarto (Q2, unofficial and based on Q1) and the 1623 First Folio. The quarto versions differ significantly from the folio version. The play was often revised after the English Restoration for audiences who disliked its dark and depressing tone, but since the 19th century Shakespeare's original play has been regarded as one of his supreme achievements. William Anthony Parker White (August 21, 1911 – April 29, 1968), better known by his pen name Anthony Boucher (), was an American author, critic, and editor who wrote several classic mystery novels, short stories, science fiction, and radio dramas. Between 1942 and 1947, he acted as reviewer of mostly mystery fiction for the ''San Francisco Chronicle''. In addition to "Anthony Boucher", White also employed the pseudonym " H. H. Holmes", which was the pseudonym of a late-19th-century American serial killer; Boucher would also write light verse and sign it "Herman W. Mudgett" (the murderer's real name). In a 1981 poll of 17 detective story writers and reviewers, his novel ''Nine Times Nine'' was voted as the ninth best locked room mystery of all time.
