Flesberg Stavkirke
Flesberg is a municipality in the traditional and electoral district Buskerud in Viken county, Norway. It is part of the traditional region of Numedal. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Lampeland. The economy of Flesberg is dominated by forestry and agriculture, as well as the cluster of high-tech industries in neighbouring Kongsberg. General information Etymology The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old ''Flesberg'' farm (Old Norse: ''Flesberg''), since the first church was built here. The first element is ''fles'' which means "rock" and the last element is ''berg'' which means "mountain". Coat-of-arms The coat-of-arms is from modern times. They were granted on 10 March 1989. Lampeland is a village located in Buskerud, Norway. It is the administrative centre of Flesberg municipality. The population of the village as of 2013 was 521 residents. Einar Haugen
Einar Ingvald Haugen (; April 19, 1906 – June 20, 1994) was an American linguist, writer, and professor at University of Wisconsin–Madison and Harvard University. Biography Haugen was born in Sioux City, Iowa, to Norwegian immigrants from the village of Oppdal in Trøndelag, Norway. When he was a young child, the family moved back to Oppdal for a few years, but then returned to the United States. He attended Morningside College in Sioux City but transferred to St. Olaf College to study with Ole Edvart Rølvaag. He earned his B.A. in 1928 and immediately went on to graduate studies in Scandinavian languages under professor George T. Flom at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he was awarded the Ph.D. in 1931. In 1931 Haugen joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he stayed until 1962. Falkenberg Municipality
Falkenberg Municipality (''Falkenbergs kommun'') is a municipality in Halland County on the Swedish west coast. The town Falkenberg is the municipal seat. The municipality was created in 1971 when the ''City of Falkenberg'' was amalgamated with six rural municipalities (themselves formed by the 1952 local government reform) and part of a seventh. There are 24 original entities within the area. Jul Låg (13 November 1915 - 2 February 2000) was a Norwegian scientist and soil researcher. Biography He was born in Flesberg in Buskerud, Norway. He grew up on the farm in Flesberg. After elementary school he was a farm laborer for several years. He took the dr.agric. degree in 1949. He also studied geology at the University of Oslo (1942–43). He studied under graduate fellowships and scholarships from (1942–45). He examined and described the rare Norwegian soil types, including rendzina-like soil. Låg has examined the supply of plant nutrients in precipitation in Norway. He hired scientists in the field both at home and abroad, organized annual symposia where he gave several speeches, and he edited the books where the various contributions were published. An area of research, which he started just before he retired, was the impact of soil and rock properties on human and animal health. Finn Qvale
Finn Qvale (18 April 1873 – 20 January 1955) was a Norwegian military officer, cartographer, and sports official. He was born in Flesberg, finished his secondary education in 1891, and graduated as an officer in 1894. He attended the Norwegian Military College. He worked in the Norwegian Geographical Survey from 1897 to 1918, and issued several maps of different places in Eastern Norway. He led the Infantry Winter School from its establishment in 1923 to 1938, having reached the rank of major in 1918. Qvale chaired the Association for the Promotion of Skiing from 1924 to 1937. () is the name for Norwegian local self-government districts that were legally enacted on 1 January 1838. This system of municipalities was created in a bill approved by the Parliament of Norway and signed into law by King Carl Johan on 14 January 1837.
