Flattop Site
The Flattop Site is a prehistoric location situated within the boundaries of the Petrified Forest National Park, near Adamana, Arizona. The site was inhabited by the Basketmaker II culture from approximately 1-300 AD. In 1949–1950 the site, consisting of roughly 25 pit-houses, was excavated by Fred Wendorf. Among the objects excavated were about fourteen projectile points. In 1953 Wendorf again excavated the site, revealing "Adamana brown" pottery, a plain brown pottery from the Basketmaker III culture. Adamana, Arizona
Adamana is an unincorporated community in Apache County in the northeast section of the U.S. state of Arizona. The town was settled in 1896 in what was then the Arizona Territory. Demographics Adamana first reported as the Adamana Precinct of Apache County in 1920 and again in 1930. In 1930, it reported a non-White majority (likely Native American). With the combination of all Arizona county precincts into three districts each in 1940, it did not formally appear again on the census. History Adamana was founded in 1896 when the railroad was extended to that point. The town was named for Adam Hanna, a local rancher who was a distant relative of the late Mark Hanna, the original settler of the region. Originally the place was known as Adam Hanna's, as time passed and more people came to visit, the elision of a few letters gave us the name Adamana. Petrified Forest National Park
Petrified Forest National Park is an American national park in Navajo County, Arizona, Navajo and Apache County, Arizona, Apache counties in northeastern Arizona. Named for its large deposits of petrified wood, the park covers about , encompassing semi-desert shrub steppe as well as highly eroded and colorful badlands. The Early Basketmaker II Era (1500 BCE – 50 CE) was the first Post-Archaic period of the Americas, Archaic cultural period of Ancient Pueblo People. The Basketmaker III Era () also called the "Modified Basketmaker" period, was the third period in which Ancient Pueblo People were cultivating food, began making pottery and living in more sophisticated clusters of pit-house dwellings.
