Flatfoot (play)
''Flatfoot'' is a 2003 comedic play by David Williamson about the Roman playwright Plautus. It is one of Williamson's few plays not to be set in contemporary Australia and was written as a vehicle for actor Drew Forsythe. It is a play-within-a-play, featuring Plautus' play '' The Swaggering Soldier''. Synopsis ''Flatfoot'' is the story of Titus Maccius Plautus (Drew Forsythe) is an ancient Roman playwright, who must convince his producer, Crassus Dives ( John Gregg), that his new play, '' The Swaggering Soldier'', will be a success and please the Roman censor. Plautus (meaning 'flatfoot') is forced to present an improvised performance before he play is yet written, playing all the characters himself, together with his wife, Cleostrata (Tina Bursill). David Williamson
David Keith Williamson Officer of the Order of Australia, AO (born 24 February 1942) is an Australians, Australian dramatist and playwright. He has also written screenplays and teleplays. Early life David Williamson was born in Melbourne, Victoria (Australia), Victoria, on 24 February 1942, and was brought up in Bairnsdale. He initially studied mechanical engineering at the University of Melbourne from 1960, but left and graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in 1965. His early forays into the theatre were as an actor and writer of skits for the Engineers' Revue at Melbourne University's Union Theatre at lunchtime during the early 1960s, and as a satirical sketch writer for Monash University student reviews and the Emerald Hill Theatre Company. Titus Maccius Plautus (; c. 254 – 184 BC), commonly known as Plautus, was a Roman playwright of the Old Latin period. Drew Forsythe (born 23 August 1949) is an Australian actor, singer, writer, and comedian. He has appeared on film, stage, and television, as well as in satirical sketch comedy television programs. Early life Born in Sydney, New South Wales, Forsythe attended Atherton Primary School, far north Queensland. Career The title roles of the heroic Tonino and the foolish Zanetto in the Nick Enright/ Terence Clarke musical, '' The Venetian Twins'', were written for Forsythe. He originated these dual roles for Nimrod Theatre Company in the first Sydney Theatre Company season in 1979, and subsequently in two revivals. ''Miles Gloriosus'' is a comedic play written by Titus Maccius Plautus (c. 254–184 B.C.). The title can be translated as "The Swaggering Soldier" or "Vainglorious Soldier". His source for ''Miles Gloriosus'' was a Greek play, now lost, called ''Alazon'' or ''The Braggart''. Although the characters in ''Miles Gloriosus'' speak Latin, they are Greeks and largely have Greek names, clothing, and customs. The action takes place in Ephesus, a Greek city on the coast of Asia Minor, famous for its Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The play is thought to date from early in Plautus's career, partly because it contains no polymetric songs (which became frequent in the later plays), and partly because lines 210–211 have been taken as a reference to the temporary imprisonment of the poet Naevius in 206 BC. Tina Bursill (born 24 July 1951) is an Australian actress. She played Louise Carter on the television series '' Skyways'' (1979–1981) and Sonia Stevens on ''Prisoner'' (1983–1984). The Ensemble Theatre is an Australian theatre company and theatre, situated in the Sydney suburb of Kirribilli, New South Wales. History It is Australia's longest continuously running professional theatre group, having given its first performance in Cammeray Children's Library on 11 May 1958.
