Flangeless Driver
On a steam locomotive, a driving wheel is a powered wheel which is driven by the locomotive's pistons (or turbine, in the case of a steam turbine locomotive). On a conventional, non-articulated locomotive, the driving wheels are all coupled together with side rods (also known as coupling rods); normally one pair is directly driven by the main rod (or connecting rod) which is connected to the end of the piston rod; power is transmitted to the others through the side rods. On diesel and electric locomotives, the driving wheels may be directly driven by the traction motors. Coupling rods are not usually used, and it is quite common for each axle to have its own motor. Jackshaft drive and coupling rods were used in the past (e.g. in the Swiss Crocodile locomotive) but their use is now confined to shunter locomotives. The NZR WH class was a class of three steam locomotives built by Manning Wardle in 1884 for service on New Zealand's private Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company (WMR). They did not acquire their WH classification until 1908 when WMR was nationalised and incorporated into the New Zealand Government Railways (NZR). A total of five locomotives were purchased by the WMR but two had been sold by the time NZR took over the company. Everett Railroad No. 11 is a 2-6-0 "Mogul" type steam locomotive. It was built in 1920 by the American Locomotive Company's Cooke Works for export to Cuba, but it remained in the United States and was sold to the Narragansett Pier Railroad in 1923. It was later operated by the Bath and Hammondsport Railroad until 1949. The locomotive was acquired by the Rail City museum in New York State in 1955, where it hauled excursion trains until 1972. In 1977, No. 11 returned to the Narragansett Pier Railroad and was partially restored, then was sold to the Middletown and New Jersey Railroad, where it was stored indoors. In 2006, No. 11 was purchased by the Everett Railroad, who sent it to the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad's shops for a complete restoration.
