Flag Of Milan
The Flag of Milan consists of a red cross on a white field. Whilst similar to the Saint George's Cross, Cross of Saint George, the flag instead symbolises the connection between Ambrose, Saint Ambrose and the city of Milan. History The association between the red cross on a white field and the city of Milan dates back to the 4th century. Saint Ambrose had been the Bishop of Milan between 374 and 397, and as a result of his influence his symbol, the red cross on a field of white became associated with the Bishop of Milan. In 1176 the Lombard League faced the forces of the Holy Roman Empire, led by Frederick I, Holy Roman Emperor, Fredrick Barbarossa, at the Battle of Legnano. Upon hearing about the arrival of the Holy Roman army, the Lombard infantry constructed a carroccio, a sacred war wagon which displayed a vexillum, to take into battle. The infantry affixed the symbol of the Bishop of Milan, Aribert (archbishop of Milan), Aribert, to the wagon and displayed it during the ba ...

Reichsadler
The ' ("Imperial Eagle") is the heraldic eagle, derived from the Roman eagle standard, used by the Holy Roman Emperors and in modern coats of arms of Germany, including those of the Second German Empire (1871–1918), the Weimar Republic (1919–1933) and Nazi Germany (1933–1945). The same design has remained in use by the Federal Republic of Germany since 1945, albeit under the name ' ("Federal Eagle"). History Holy Roman Empire The ''Reichsadler'', i. e. the German Imperial Eagle, originated from a proto-heraldic emblem that was believed to have been used by Charlemagne, the first Frankish ruler whom the Pope crowned as Holy Roman Emperor in AD 800, and derived ultimately from the '' Aquila'', i. e. eagle standard, of the ancient Roman army. An eagle statue was erected on the roof of the Carolingian palace, and an eagle was placed on the orb of Emperor Otto III. Emperor Frederick Barbarossa popularised use of the eagle as the Imperial emblem by using it in all his bann ...

Biscione
The ''biscione'' or ''bisson'' . ("big grass snake"), less commonly known also as the ''vipera'' ("viper"), is a heraldic charge showing on argent an azure serpent in the act of eating or giving birth to a human. It is a historic symbol of the city of Milan, used by companies based in the city. History Etymologically, word ''biscione'' is a masculine augmentative of Italian feminine ''biscia'' "grass snake" (corrupted from ''bistia'', ultimately from Latin "beast"). The charge became associated with the city after the Visconti family gained control over Milan 1277; Bonvesin da la Riva records it in his ''De magnalibus urbis Mediolani'' (''On the Marvels of the City of Milan'') as a Visconti symbol no later than the end of the 13th century. The symbol may have been derived from a bronzed serpent brought to Milan from Constantinople by Arnolf II of Arsago (Archbishop of Milan 998–1018) in the 11th century. One of the oldest depictions of the Biscione is in the Grea ...

Lombard Nationalism
Lombard nationalism is a nationalist, but primarily regionalist, movement active primarily in Lombardy, Italy. It seeks more autonomy or even independence from Italy for Lombardy and, possibly, all the lands that are linguistically or historically Lombard. During the 1990s, it was strictly connected with Padanian nationalism. Today the main Lombard nationalist parties are the Lombard League and Pro Lombardy Independence. History Like in the rest of Europe, during the Romantic Era there was an awakening of the national sentiment in Lombardy. The Napoleonic creation of the Cispadane Republic, which was later replaced by the Cisalpine one, opened the doors to the political debate. Carlo Botta, a Piedmontese politician, wrote a book entitled ''Proposition to the Lombards about a way of free government'', where he claimed the need of a constitution for the ''Lombard Nation'', independent from the French one inspired by the Revolution. At the same time, Giuseppe Faroni proposed ...
