The flag of French Polynesia (french: drapeau de la Polynésie française) is the civil and state flag of the French overseas country French Polynesia. It was adopted in 1984. Description Two red horizontal bands encase a wide white band in a 1:2:1 ratio; centered on the white band is the coat of arms of French Polynesia as a 0.43m diameter disk with a blue and white wave pattern depicting the sea on the lower half and a gold and white ray pattern depicting the sun on the upper half; a Polynesian canoe rides on the wave pattern; the canoe has a crew of five represented by five stars that symbolize the five island groups; red and white are traditional Polynesian colors. The coat of arms of French Polynesia consists of an outrigger depicted in a disc over a stylized emblem of sun and sea. The Coat of arms is placed prominently in the middle of the flag of French Polynesia. Description Adopted 23 November 1984 by the Assembly of French Polynesia, at the same time as the flag in which the arms have centre place, the coat of arms shows a stylized Polynesian sailing canoe, a Tahitian and national traditional symbol. It is encircled by a rising sun in the upper half, and by waves in the lower one. The five asterisks represents the five Archipelagos: the Society Islands, the Tuamotus, the Gambier Islands, the Austral Islands and the Marquesas. Tubuai or Tupuai is the main island of the Austral Island group, located south of Tahiti. Pukarua
Pukarua, sometimes also listed as "Pukaruha" (especially on French maps), is a coral atoll in the eastern Tuamotu Archipelago. The nearest atoll, Reao, is located 48 km to the ESE. Pukarua Atoll is 17 km long and its maximum width is 4.5 km. It has a long island on its northeastern reef, shaped somewhat like a fish hook, as well as a number of small islands. The atoll is surrounded by a coral reef without a proper passage. There is a pier from which small to medium-sized ships can be launched.The only village is Marautagaroa, populated by about 100 inhabitants. The atoll's lagoon is interesting for snorkelers because of the presence of giant clams.
