Flag Of Eastern Province
The flag of Eastern Province, was adopted for the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka on 22 May 2007. History With the Supreme Court ruling that by 2007 the 1987 order of merging the two provinces, under the Indo-Sri Lanka Accord, Northern and Eastern was illegal and therefore the two provinces must be administered separately. This meant two separate flags for the Northern and Eastern provinces. The Eastern Province flag was unveiled along with the flag of Northern Province in Trincomalee, in May 2007. The governor of the Eastern Province Rear Admiral Mohan Wijewickrema, also at the time the acting governor of the Northern Province, handed over the two flags to each of the province's respective council's chief secretary, S. Rangarajah of the North and Herath Abeyeweera of the East, at a ceremony at the Governor's Secretariat. Eastern Province, Sri Lanka
The Eastern Province ( ta, கிழக்கு மாகாணம் ''Kiḻakku Mākāṇam''; si, නැගෙනහිර පළාත ''Næ̆gĕnahira Paḷāta'') is one of the nine provinces of Sri Lanka, the first level administrative division of the country. The provinces have existed since the 19th century but did not have any legal status until 1987 when the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka established provincial councils. Between 1988 and 2006 the province was temporarily merged with the Northern Province to form the North Eastern Province. The capital of the province is Trincomalee. Sri Lankan Moors ( ta, இலங்கைச் சோனகர், translit=Ilaṅkaic Cōṉakar; si, ලංකා යෝනක, translit=Lanka Yonaka; formerly Ceylon Moors; colloquially referred to as Sri Lankan Muslims) are an ethnic minority group in Sri Lanka, comprising 9.2% of the country's total population.
