Fjærland
Fjærland or Mundal is a village in Sogndal Municipality, at the end of the Fjærlandsfjorden, in Vestland county, Norway. The Fjærlandfjorden is a branch going north off the Sognefjorden, the longest fjord in Norway. The village area is located about northwest of the municipal center of Sogndalsfjøra, along the Norwegian National Road 5. The village and its surrounding area encompass rich farming country, including the nearby areas of Bøyum and Oygard. The glacier arms Bøyabreen and Supphellebreen (a part of the Jostedalsbreen glacier) and the Norwegian Glacier Museum are located nearby. Fjærland is also the Norwegian book town, with book shops situated in old cow sheds and pigpens; there are also book shops on the ferry quay and in the Hotel Mundal. The Hotel Mundal is an old wooden building in 19th-century style still in business as a hotel. The hotel was owned by the Orheim family for over a hundred years, until August 2008, when it was sold. Fjærland Church
Fjærland Church ( no, Fjærland kyrkje) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Sogndal Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Fjærland, near the northern end of the Fjærlandsfjorden. It is the church for the Fjærland parish which is part of the Sogn prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, wooden church was built in a long church design in 1861 using plans drawn up by the architect Christian Henrik Grosch. The church seats about 300 people. History The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1306, but the church was not new that year. The first church at Fjærland was likely built in the 12th century and it was a wooden stave church. Historically, the church was also known as the ''Mundal Church''. Fjærland Tunnel
The Fjærland Tunnel ( no, Fjærlandstunnelen) is a long road tunnel in Vestland county, Norway. The tunnel opened on 31 May 1986 and it is part of Norwegian National Road 5. The opening ceremony was led by former US vice president Walter Mondale who has family connections to Fjærland. The tunnel connects the village of Lunde in Sunnfjord Municipality and the village of Fjærland in Sogndal Municipality. The tunnel goes through mountains in the Jostedalsbreen National Park which lies between the two villages. The Marabreen glacier sits high above the tunnel. The village area of Fjærland was only accessible by boat on the Fjærlandsfjorden until 1986 when this tunnel opened. Balestrand Municipality
Balestrand is a former municipality in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. It was located on the northern shore of the Sognefjorden in the traditional district of Sogn. The administrative center was the village of Balestrand. Other villages in the municipality included Ese, Kvamme, Låne, Sæle, Tjugum, and Vetlefjorden. The municipality was situated at the confluence of the Fjærlandsfjorden/Esefjorden and the main Sognefjorden. The major industries in the municipality were tourism and farming. Fjærlandsfjorden
Fjærlandsfjorden is a fjord in Vestland county, Norway. It is a fjord arm that branches off the main Sognefjorden to the north, running through Sogndal Municipality. The long fjord begins at the village of Fjærland in Sogndal, flowing to the south until it joins the Sognefjorden near the village of Balestrand. The Esefjorden and Vetlefjorden are two small fjord arms that branch off the Fjærdlandsfjorden. The fjord is about wide, with steep mountains on both sides of the fjord. The head of the fjord is the only habitable area around the fjord. It is a flat river valley extending north of the fjord. Frudal Tunnel
The Frudal Tunnel ( no, Frudalstunnelen) is a road tunnel along the Norwegian National Road 5 in the municipality of Sogndal in Vestland county, Norway. The tunnel begins at the Frudalen farm, goes through the mountains under the Frudalsbreen glacier, and exits at the small Berge farm area. The tunnel was opened on 29 October 1994 to connect the Fjærland area to the rest of the region. Prior to its opening in 1994, there was no way to get from Sogndal to Fjærland (in Balestrand) other than by driving from Sogndal to Leikanger and then taking a ferry to Fjærland—quite a long journey. The only road connection to Fjærland was via the Fjærland Tunnel to Jølster Municipality to the northwest (that tunnel was built in 1986). Norwegian Glacier Museum
The Norwegian Glacier Museum ( no, Norsk Bremuseum) is a museum in Fjærland, Vestland county, Norway. The building was designed by architect Sverre Fehn. In 2002 a decision was made to build an extension to the museum, which was also designed by Fehn. The museum also houses the Ulltveit-Moe Climate Centre, a Fehn-designed addition that opened in 2007. The museum's stated purpose is to "collect, create and disseminate knowledge about glaciers and climate". Supphellebreen is a glacier in the Fjærland area of Sogndal Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located about north of the village of Fjærland.
