Five Islands, Nova Scotia
Five Islands is a rural community in Colchester County Nova Scotia with a population of 316 located on the north shore of Minas Basin, home of the highest tides in the world. It is named after five small islands – Moose, Diamond, Long, Egg, and Pinnacle – located just off the coast. The islands are an exposed part of the North Mountain Basalt. Moose Island is in Colchester County. The remaining islands are in Cumberland County. Beyond Pinnacle Island is a seastack called Pinnacle Rock. The Five Islands Provincial Park includes Moose and Diamond Islands. Five Islands had a lighthouse in operation from 1914 to 1999. It was moved several times due to erosion. The lighthouse has since been preserved by a community group. Native Mi'kmaq legend has it that the Five Islands were created when their god Glooscap threw the mud, sticks and stones at the giant beaver who dammed his medicine garden in Advocate. Purdy Crawford
Purdy Crawford, (November 7, 1931 – August 12, 2014) was a Canadian lawyer and businessman. Education Born in Five Islands, Nova Scotia, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mount Allison University in 1952, a bachelor of laws degree from Dalhousie Law School in 1955, and a master of laws from Harvard Law School in 1956. He was called to the Bar of Nova Scotia in 1956 and the Bar of Ontario in 1958. He was created a Queen's Counsel in 1968. Law career In 1956, he joined the law firm of Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt as a student. Specializing in corporate and commercial law, he became an associate lawyer in 1958, partner in 1962, and a senior partner from 1970 to 1985. He articled with Roland Ritchie in Halifax and studied labour law at Harvard with Archibald Cox, best known as the Watergate special prosecutor. Cobequid Fault
The Cobequid Fault is a fault that is the extension of the Chedabucto Fault. This fault runs from Truro to Cape Chignecto south of the Cobequid Hills. Both the Cobequid fault and the Chedabucto Fault form the Minas Fault zone splitting Nova Scotia into the Avalon Zone and the Meguma Zone. Movement on the Cobequid Fault started before 400 million years ago and end around 40 million years ago. Between that time around 350 million years violent volcanic eruptions at Spicers Cove north Cape Chignecto Provincial Park and 50 million years after grey sandstone rich in fossil plants were deposited. Gmelinite
Gmelinite-Na is one of the rarer zeolites but the most common member of the gmelinite series, gmelinite-Ca, gmelinite-K and gmelinite-Na. It is closely related to the very similar mineral chabazite.
