Louis Jordan
Louis Thomas Jordan (July 8, 1908 – February 4, 1975) was an American saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and bandleader who was popular from the late 1930s to the early 1950s. Known as " the King of the Jukebox", he earned his highest profile towards the end of the swing era. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an "early influence" in 1987. Specializing in the alto sax, Jordan played all forms of the saxophone, as well as piano and clarinet. He also was a talented singer with great comedic flair, and fronted his own band for more than twenty years. He duetted with some of the biggest solo singing stars of his time, including Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Tympany Five
Tympany Five was a successful and influential American rhythm and blues and jazz dance band founded by Louis Jordan in 1938. The group was composed of a horn section of three to five different pieces and also drums, double bass, guitar and piano. Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five created many of the most influential songs of the early R&B and rock and roll era, including " Let The Good Times Roll", "Keep A-Knockin'", and " Caldonia". Carl Hogan's opening riff to " Ain't That Just Like A Woman" later became one of rock's most recognizable riffs in Chuck Berry's " Johnny B. Goode". Jordan first formed the band as "The Elks Rendezvous Band", named after the Elks Rendezvous jazz joint in Harlem. Jerome (Jerry) Bresler (May 29, 1914 in Chicago, Illinois – March 17, 2000 in Delray Beach, Florida) was an American conductor, songwriter and musician. He played piano at the age of 2 and conducted the NYU orchestra at 14. One of his most famous musical compositions was ''Five Guys Named Moe''. He was educated at Theodore Roosevelt High School (Chicago) (where in 1931 he wrote the school song "Go Rough Riders Go"), Chicago Musical College and DePaul University, where he studied music theory, composition, conducting and orchestration with Dr. Samuel Lieberson, and at NYU with Schillinger method professor Rudolf Schramm. In 1950, he joined ASCAP and started producing shows for various nightclub acts like Robert Goulet, Sophie Tucker and Arlene Dahl. ''Five Guys Named Moe'' is a musical with a book by Clarke Peters and lyrics and music by Louis Jordan and others. The musical is based on an earlier musical short of the same name by Louis Jordan from 1943. It had its UK debut at the Cottesloe Theatre at the National Theatre followed by a short run at the Theatre Royal Stratford East, before moving to the West End for over four years in, and finally premiering on Broadway in 1992. It was revived in 2010 at Edinburgh Festival, starring Peters himself, and returned later in 2010 to the theatre in which it originally premiered. The musical won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Entertainment.
