Fitzroy Football Club
The Fitzroy Football Club is an Australian rules football club currently competing in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). Formed in 1883 to represent the inner-Melbourne municipality of Fitzroy, the club was a member of the Victorian Football Association (VFA), before becoming a foundation member of the breakaway Victorian Football League (VFL/AFL) in 1897. Fitzroy won a total of eight VFL premierships, of which seven (1898, 1899, 1904, 1905, 1913, 1916 and 1922) were won whilst they were nicknamed the Maroons and one (1944) as the Gorillas. The decision of the club to change its nickname to the Lions in 1957 coincided with what history now records as the beginning of decades of poor on-field performance and financial losses that eventually resulted in the club being placed into administration, ultimately leaving the AFL at the end of the 1996 season. Bill McSpeerin
William Joseph McSpeerin (25 September 1874 – 3 June 1943) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of James McSpeerin (1846-1909), and Catherine McSpeerin (1842-1890), née Reid, William Joseph McSpeerin was born at Carlton, Victoria on 25 September 1874. He married Mary Anna "Marie" Rau (1876-1961) in 1906. Football A rover, McSpeerin debuted with Fitzroy when the club was still in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) and was a member of their 1895 premiership side. When the Victorian Football League was formed in 1897, McSpeerin was a key member of the team and appeared in 10 out of 14 games that season, including one match against St Kilda where he reportedly ran the entire length of the oval to kick a goal. William John Dick (16 July 1889 – 18 November 1960) was an Australian rules footballer who played for and in the Victorian Football League (VFL). George 'Snowy' Lambert (9 September 1887 – 20 March 1938) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Fitzroy in the early years of the VFL. George Holden (Australian Rules Footballer)
George Hugh Holden (15 April 1889 – 21 July 1959) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League The Victorian Football League (VFL) is an Australian rules football league in Australia serving as one of the second-tier regional semi-professional competitions which sit underneath the fully professional Australian Football League (AFL). It ... (VFL). Holden was both a centreman and wingman during his career with Fitzroy, which began in 1908. He was club champion in his debut season, winning the best and fairest award for the second time in 1915. One of Fitzroy's best in their 1913 premiership, Holden was named as the club's coach three years later and was a premiership player again in his first year in the role. He also captained the club in 1917 and 1918 while remaining coach but had to retire at the start of the 1919 season after suffering a serious knee injury. Herbert Milne
Herbert "Boxer" Milne (8 February 1884 – 20 December 1930) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club and South Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the early 1900s. Family The son of John Milne (1855-1921), and Mary Lavinia Milne, née Landorf, Herbert Milne was born at Benalla, Victoria on 8 February 1884. One of his two brothers, Hector Norman Milne (1880-1960), who played two seasons (1899-1900) with Richmond and two seasons with North Melbourne (1902-1903) in the VFA, enlisted in the First AIF (Service no.953) and lost an eye from a bayonet wound whilst serving. Wally Johnson
Walter Simon Johnson (1 September 1887 – 9 October 1962) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of Thomas Henry Johnson (1866-1915), and Eliza Caroline Johnson (1863-1949), née Thomas, Walter Simon Johnson was born in Collingwood on 1 September 1887. He died on 9 October 1962. Football Having initially tried to play with Collingwood, Johnson made his debut for Fitzroy in 1907 and finished the year as the club's joint best and fairest winner. He played most of his career at half back but played up forward for his first three seasons, topping Fitzroy's goal-kicking in 1908 with 27 goals. Ernest Merrett Jenkins (4 October 1879 – 21 December 1927) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club, coach of the Richmond Football Club and an umpire in the Victorian Football League (VFL).
