Swartkops River
Swartkops River, also Zwartskop River, (Afrikaans: ''black hills'') is a watercourse in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The source of the Swartkops is near Cockscombe Mountain, and it flows east into the Algoa Bay of the Indian Ocean The Indian Ocean is the third-largest of the world's five oceanic divisions, covering or ~19.8% of the water on Earth's surface. Water Management Areas
Water Management Areas (WMAs) are parts of South Africa that are managed by Catchment Management Agencies (CMAs). A CMA is established in terms of the National Water Act of 1998. (As of December 2020 only two CMAs have been established). The list should be complete, and in accordance with the definitions of the Department of Water Affairs. Apart from these WMAs they also have a number of Water Drainage Areas (some dams are only used for drainage, some seem to be used for both). Nqweba Dam
Nqweba Dam (previously known as Vanryneveld's Pass Dam), is an earth-fill type dam located on the Sundays River, near Graaff Reinet, in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. It was established in 1925. The dam has a capacity of , and a surface area of , the wall is , and is long. Once an irrigation dam, it now mainly serves to supply potable water for domestic and industrial use to the residents and businesses of Graaff-Reinet. Its hazard potential has been ranked high (3). The turacos make up the bird family Musophagidae ( "banana-eaters"), which includes plantain-eaters and go-away-birds. In southern Africa both turacos and go-away-birds are commonly known as loeries. They are semi-zygodactylous: the fourth (outer) toe can be switched back and forth. The second and third toes, which always point forward, are conjoined in some species. Musophagids often have prominent crests and long tails; the turacos are noted for peculiar and unique pigments giving them their bright green and red feathers. Traditionally, this group has been allied with the cuckoos in the order Cuculiformes, but the Sibley-Ahlquist taxonomy raises this group to a full order Musophagiformes. Kouga River
The Kouga River originates near Uniondale, Eastern Cape, South Africa, and flows eastward, where it joins the Groot River to form the Gamtoos just past the Kouga Dam. Its main tributary is the Baviaanskloof River, which joins its left bank before the dam. The Kouga is part of the Gamtoos river system which is formed by the Groot and the Baviaanskloof River. The Kouga Mountains to the north the river, Kouga Municipality and Kou-Kamma Municipality are named after this waterbody. Ecology In 1995 specimens of the Cape galaxias (''Galaxias zebratus''), a South African fish species endemic to the Cape Floristic Region, were found in the Kouga and in the Krom River. Kouga Dam
The Kouga Dam is an arch dam on the Kouga River about west of Patensie in Kouga Local Municipality, South Africa. It supplies irrigation water to the Kouga and Gamtoos valleys as well as drinking water to the Port Elizabeth metropolitan area via the Loerie Balancing Dam. It was constructed between 1957 and 1969. The dam can be accessed by following the R330 and then the R331 from the N2 at Humansdorp. All but the last is tarred road and there is a short tunnel just before the dam wall. It was named the ''Paul Sauer Dam'' after Paul Sauer, but was renamed in 1995. Kouga Dam Power Station There are three 1200 kVA hydroelectric turbines at the base of the dam, but they are currently not in use. Tarka River
The Tarka River is a river in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Along with the Baviaans River, Grootbrak River and Kat River it is a major eastern tributary of the Great Fish River. The Lake Arthur Dam and the Kommandodrif Dam are located in this river. The latter is included in the Commando Drift Nature Reserve. Kat River
The Kat River ( af, Katrivier) is a tributary of the Great Fish River, that drains the southern slopes of the Winterberg in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Etymology Kat, meaning "cat", is a translation of the Khoekhoen word "huncu", that apparently referred to the wildcats of the area. It lent its name to Katberg, the Katberg Pass and the Kat River Settlement. Course and utilization The long Kat River rises 30 km north of Fort Beaufort in the Katberg escarpment of the Winterberg. At it forms a northern tributary of the Great Fish River, northeast of Fort Brown and south of Hamburg, Eastern Cape.
