First Presbyterian Church (Waurika, Oklahoma)
First Presbyterian Church is a historic church in Waurika, Oklahoma. It was built in 1908 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. It is a one-story brick building with a side tower. It featured green-painted wood shingles in its gable ends and on the tower. Wide, overhanging boxed eaves seem to be consistent with Prairie School architecture, Prairie School style. It has fifty-six-over-one windows on the front, fifty-six-over-four windows on the side, and one-over-one windows on the back. It was designed by Amarillo, Texas architect J.C. Berry. When listed in 2001, the building was owned by the city of Waurika and had not operated as a church since the 1980s. Waurika, Oklahoma
Waurika is the county seat of Jefferson County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,064 at the 2010 census, a 4.36 percent decrease from 2,158 at the 2000 census. An article from 1985 in ''The Oklahoman'' claimed that Waurika promoted itself as "The Parakeet Capital of the World". It gave no explanation for using this slogan. The Waurika Chamber of Commerce website in 2020 echoes that the town was "once a parakeet paradise," but currently seems to be promoting the motto ''On The Trail, By The Lake'', complete with a logo of a cowboy bronc-riding a fish. City name The name is the anglicized version of the Comanche compound ''woarɨhka'' ("worm eater") from ''woa'' ("worm") + ''tɨhka'' ("eat") and presumably refers to early European settlers whose plowing humorously resembled digging for worms. Prairie School Architecture
Prairie School is a late 19th- and early 20th-century architectural style, most common in the Midwestern United States. The style is usually marked by horizontal lines, flat or hipped roofs with broad overhanging eaves, windows grouped in horizontal bands, integration with the landscape, solid construction, craftsmanship, and discipline in the use of ornament. Horizontal lines were thought to evoke and relate to the wide, flat, treeless expanses of America's native prairie landscape.
