''First Love, Last Rites'' is a collection of short stories by Ian McEwan. It was first published in 1975 by Jonathan Cape, with cover designed by Bill Botten, and re-issued in 1997 by Vintage. Context The collection is McEwan's first published work and was regarded by the author (along with his second collection of short stories, '' In Between the Sheets'') as an opportunity to experiment and find his voice as a writer. In an interview with Christopher Ricks in 1979, McEwan commented, "They were a kind of laboratory for me. They allowed me to try out different things, to discover myself as a writer." As a piece of work that portrays McEwan, the writer, at his youngest, it is perhaps fitting that the dominant theme is that of adolescence, of the blurry and perilous divide between childhood and adulthood; in addition themes of sex, perversion, and the grotesque in its many forms feature throughout. ''First Love, Last Rites'' is a 1997 American romantic drama film directed by Jesse Peretz and starring Natasha Gregson Wagner and Giovanni Ribisi. It is based on the short story of the same name by Ian McEwan and centers on the passionate love affair between a young couple over one Louisiana summer. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 1997 and received a limited release on August 7, 1998. Plot During a summer In Louisiana, Joey and Sissel are two young lovers fresh out of high school entangled in a consuming love affair. How the couple met is not disclosed, but Joey is originally from Brooklyn and Sissel is a local. In a house on stilts by the river, the couple do little more than talk and have sex, with the occasional interruption by Sissel’s younger brother Adrian. Sissel’s parents are divorced. First Love, Last Rites (musical Group)
First Love, Last Rites (FLLR) is an indie pop-/rock band formed in Umeå, Sweden in 2009. The band is signed to the labels Heist or Hit records (UK), Nomethod records (Scandinavia), and Afterhours Records (Japan). First Love, Last Rites released their debut single Slow Wind. on 13 September 2010. It rapidly created a buzz in the Scandinavian blogosphere. Tram7 was one of the music blogs that wrote about the single. The band went on to record the rest of their debut album, which included layers and layers of guitar tracks; vocals were put in the back of the mix. The band released a second single-"I'm gone"- on 24 December, just before the self-titled debut album "First Love, Last Rites" appeared on 5 January 2011.
