First Jones Government
The first Jones government (10 December 2009 – 11 May 2011) was a continuation of the previous Labour–Plaid Cymru coalition government in Wales. Following Rhodri Morgan's decision to retire, a leadership contest was held for the position of Welsh Labour Leader. Welsh Government
The Welsh Government ( cy, Llywodraeth Cymru) is the Welsh devolution, devolved government of Wales. The government consists of ministers and Minister (government), deputy ministers, and also of a Counsel General for Wales, counsel general. Ministers only attend the Cabinet Meetings of the Welsh Government. It is led by the First Minister of Wales, first minister, usually the leader of the largest party in the Senedd (Welsh Parliament; ), who selects ministers and deputy ministers with the approval of the Senedd. Counsel General For Wales
The Counsel General for Wales is the Welsh Government's Law Officer (akin to the role of Attorney general in other jurisdictions using the Common law), which means the government's chief legal adviser and representative in the courts. In addition to these "lawyer" roles the Counsel General also works to uphold the rule of law and integrity of the legal community in Wales, and has a number of important specific statutory functions, some of which are to be exercised independently of government and in the public interest. The Counsel General is appointed by the sovereign on the recommendation of the First Minister of Wales. The recommendation of the First Minister to appoint or remove the Counsel General can only be made if approved by the Senedd. Carl Sargeant
Carl Sargeant (1968 – 7 November 2017) was a Welsh politician who was the Cabinet Secretary for Communities and Children in the Welsh Government. He represented the constituency of Alyn and Deeside in the National Assembly for Wales from 2003. Sargeant was removed from his Cabinet position and suspended from Welsh Labour on 3 November 2017 following allegations about his behaviour. He died four days later, reportedly taking his own life. On 11 July 2019, an inquest ruled his death a suicide. Background Sargeant was born in St Asaph, Flintshire, to Sylvia (née Hughes) and Malcolm Sargeant. Before becoming an Assembly Member, Sargeant worked as a process operator at the Warwick International Limited chemical manufacturing plant in Mostyn. Elin Jones
Elin Jones (born 1 September 1966) is a Welsh politician who has served as the Llywydd of the Senedd since 2016. A member of Plaid Cymru, Jones has been the Member of the Senedd (MS) for Ceredigion since 1999. Background Jones attended Llanwnnen Primary School and Lampeter Comprehensive. She graduated from University of Wales, Cardiff with a BSc in Economics and took a post-graduate MSc in Agricultural Economics at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth in 1989. Alun Ffred Jones
Alun Ffred Jones (born 29 October 1949) is a Welsh politician and member of Plaid Cymru and former television producer, writer and director. Jones was the National Assembly for Wales Member for Caernarfon 2003–07 and for the newly created Arfon constituency from 2007 until he stood down in 2016. He served as Minister for Heritage between 2008 and 2011 as part of the One Wales Government. In 2008 he made history by being the first UK representative to speak in the Welsh language at a meeting of the European Union. Jane Hutt
Jane Elizabeth Hutt MS (born 15 December 1949) is a Welsh Labour Party politician serving as Minister for Social Justice since 2021. Leighton Andrews
Leighton Andrews (born 11 August 1957) is an academic and former Welsh Labour politician. He was the National Assembly for Wales member for Rhondda (National Assembly for Wales constituency), Rhondda from 2003 until 2016. He was Department for Education and Skills (Wales), Minister for Children, Education & Lifelong Learning from 2009 to 2011, then Minister for Education and Skills in the Welsh Government until his resignation on 25 June 2013 after an alleged conflict between his own departmental policy and his active campaigning to save a school in his constituency.
