The First Congregational Church of Plainfield is a historic Congregational church at 519 Norwich Road in Plainfield, Connecticut. It was built in 1816, for a congregation founded in 1705, to plans by noted early architect Ithiel Town, and is a relative rarity in the state as a Federal period stone church. The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The congregation is affiliated with the United Church of Christ. Architecture and history Plainfield's First Congregational Church is located on the north side of the town's main village, on the west side of Norwich Road (Connecticut Route 12) south of Cemetery Road. History The Congregational Church established a congregation in Davenport in 1839 as First Congregational Church and in 1861 it was reorganized as Edward's Congregational Church. The denomination was never large or broad-based in the city and was supported in part by the American Home Mission Society. In 1857 the German Congregational Church was founded with a handful of members. They merged with Bethlehem Congregational Mission in 1909 and formed Berea Congregational Church. The First Congregational Church of Western Springs is a historic church designed by George Grant Elmslie. It is considered the finest example of Gothic Revival and Prairie School design in town. History The First Congregation Church of Western Springs in Illinois was founded in 1887. By the 1921, the congregation had expanded to a point where a new church building was required. In 1924, a Building and Planning Committee was formed out of the congregation to seek out an architect. Seven architects from Chicago and St. Louis were interviewed. The design submitted by George Grant Elmslie was selected as the winning bid in 1926. Elmslie had just ended a lengthy partnership with William Gray Purcell and had opened an independent practice in Chicago. The committee was fond of Elmslie's recent Capitol Building and Loan Association in Topeka, Kansas, and envisioned a similar structure. The church was built in 1897 and 1898 and is an example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. History On May 15, 1896 it was announced that the Congregationalists in Sterling were set to construct a new church. Later that year, on July 1, it was reported in the local ''Sterling Gazette'' that an architect's design had been selected and that the church would cost a total of US$15,000. First Congregational Church is a historic Congregational church located at 202 N 6th Street in Marshall, Illinois. Built in 1909, the church was the third built for Marshall's First Congregation, which was established in 1841. The Gray Construction Company built the church in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. The church has limestone walls laid in alternating smooth and rusticated rows. The asymmetrical entrance features two arches supported by columns with ornamental floral capitals. The church has multiple stained glass windows, including a rose window on its front facade. A bell tower with square pillars at the upper corners marks the southeast corner of the building. The tower's bell, a relic from the original two churches, was made in 1850 by the Buckeye Bell Foundry of Cincinnati, Ohio.
