First Baptist Church (Garden City, Minnesota)
First Baptist Church is a historic church in Garden City, Minnesota, United States. The town, along the Watonwan River, was originally established in 1856 as Fremont. A Baptist congregation was formed in the community in 1858, and eight years later, the church was formally organized. In 1867, the membership split amidst a disagreement between members who wanted a more aggressive evangelical mission and members who wanted the status quo. One of the groups moved ahead with plans to build a church, contracting for the delivery of logs to a nearby sawmill. The sawmill was unable to receive the logs before winter came, though, and the logs were washed away in spring flooding. The congregation then made plans to build a church from concrete blocks made in the town by the firm of Geist and Hentzelman. Garden City, Minnesota
Garden City is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Garden City Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota, United States. Its population was 255 as of the 2010 census. History A post office called Garden City was established in 1857. The community was named from the garden-like setting of the original town site. The First Baptist Church building was completed in 1868. The Blue Earth County Fair has been held in Garden City since 1860 with the exception of a few years the fair was cancelled. In 1921, on a visit from London, Henry Wellcome donated land he had purchased to the hamlet of Garden City to build a consolidated school. The school that was built on the site became Wellcome Memorial school, eventually combining with Rapidan, Vernon Center, and Lake Crystal school districts. Watonwan River
The Watonwan River is a tributary of the Blue Earth River, long, in southern Minnesota in the United States. Via the Blue Earth and Minnesota rivers, it is part of the watershed of the Mississippi River, draining an area of in an agricultural region. The Watonwan drains about a quarter of the Blue Earth River's watershed. The river was the site of the capture of Bob, Cole and Jim Younger (members of the James–Younger Gang) near Madelia in 1876. Geography The Watonwan River rises in Amboy Township, approximately southwest of Jeffers in central Cottonwood County, and flows generally eastwardly across flat till plains through northern Watonwan and western Blue Earth counties, past the city of Madelia.
