Fiona McIntosh (fencer)
Fiona McIntosh (born 24 June 1960) is a Scottish writer and retired fencer. Biography McIntosh was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and educated at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. During her fencing career, she was British champion four times, she won the Commonwealth Fencing Championships in 1990, collected a total of 12 Commonwealth medals and competed in the 1984, 1988, 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics, reaching the finals in Barcelona 1992. She has written articles for magazines, and worked with photographer Shaen Adey to produce books including ''Seven Days in Mauritius'' and ''Table Mountain Activity Guide'', both published by Random House Random House is an American book publisher and the largest general-interest paperback publisher in the world. Random House is an American book publisher and the largest general-interest paperback publisher in the world. The company has several independently managed subsidiaries around the world. Fencing
Fencing is a group of three related combat sports. The three disciplines in modern fencing are the foil, the épée, and the sabre (also ''saber''); winning points are made through the weapon's contact with an opponent. A fourth discipline, singlestick, appeared in the 1904 Olympics but was dropped after that and is not a part of modern fencing. Fencing was one of the first sports to be played in the Olympics. Based on the traditional skills of swordsmanship, the modern sport arose at the end of the 19th century, with the Italian school having modified the historical European martial art of classical fencing, and the French school later refining the Italian system.
