Finnish Institute Of Marine Research
The Finnish Institute of Marine Research (FIMR) ( fi, Merentutkimuslaitos and sv, Havsforskningsinstitutet) was a research institute founded in 1918 that was subordinate to the Ministry of Transport and Communications. The institute's main objective was to produce marine-science information to facilitate decision-making, for Finns and in international collaboration, and for use in seafaring. Biological research would not be included for several decades, and all four internal divisions were headed by physicists or geophysicists through the 1950s. The Institute was originally housed at Konstantinin Street 8 (now Meritullinkadun) on the Helsinki seaport, and in 1926 moved a mile south to a government building at 2 Tähtitornin St. There it remained until September 2005, when its headquarters became Dynamicum, a building it shares with the Finnish Meteorological Institute in Kumpula, Helsinki. Dynamicum
Dynamicum is the name of a building on the Kumpula Campus of the University of Helsinki that is shared by the Finnish Meteorological Institute and the Finnish Institute of Marine Research. Dynamicum is located in Kumpula, Helsinki. Construction on the building was completed in September 2005, at which point in time the Finnish Meteorological Institute and the Finnish Institute of Marine Research moved in. The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI; fi, Ilmatieteen laitos; sv, Meteorologiska institutet) is the government agency responsible for gathering and reporting weather data and forecasts in Finland. It is a part of the Ministry of Transport and Communications but it operates semi-autonomously. The Institute is an impartial research and service organisation with expertise covering a wide range of atmospheric science activities other than gathering and reporting weather data and forecasts. Kumpula
Kumpula ( sv, Gumtäkt) is a verdant neighbourhood in Helsinki, bordered by Eastern Pasila to the west, Vallila to the south, Käpylä and Koskela to the north and Toukola and Arabianranta to the east. As of January 1, 2003, Kumpula had approximately 3,600 inhabitants. The name Gumteckt or Gumtäckt appears already in documents from the 15th century. The current Finnish name Kumpula was given in 1928. Kumpula was incorporated into the city of Helsinki in 1906. The oldest part of Kumpula, around the long street Limingantie, consists of wooden houses built in the 1920s and 1930s. Around the university campus and in the western part of Kumpula are newer apartment buildings built in and after the 1980s. HOAS has built student housing in the area. Rolf Johan Witting (30 September 1879 in Viipuri – 11 October 1944 in Porvoon maalaiskunta) was a Finnish oceanographist and politician, member of four of Finland's cabinets 1924–1943. Scientific career Witting graduated as Abitur in 1897, Candidate of Philosophy in 1901, Master of Philosophy in 1907, Licentiate 1909 and Doctor of Philosophy in 1910. Erik Palmén
Erik Herbert Palmén (31 August 1898 – 19 March 1985) was a Finnish meteorologist, born in Vaasa. He worked at the University of Chicago in the Chicago school of meteorology (started by Carl-Gustaf Rossby) on cyclones and weather fronts with Vilhelm Bjerknes. He contributed to the explanation of the dynamics of the jet stream and the analysis of data collected by radiosondes; his preprocessed and quality checked datasets were widely used by other researchers. Palmen was a multisided researcher who published articles in meteorology, geophysics and oceanography. The 1969 book by Palmen and Chester W. Newton, "Atmospheric Circulation Systems: Their Structure and Interpretation", is still used as lecture material in the universities around the world.
