Finnish Basketball Player Of The Year
The Finnish Basketball Player of the Year is an annual award that is given to the best basketball player (male or female) with Finnish citizenship. Finnish players that are playing anywhere in the world, qualify for the award. The award is voted on by Finnish sports journalists. The award was first given in 1948. Hanno Möttölä has won the most player of the year awards, with eight. A female player has been chosen for the award three times. The first female selection was Hilkka Hakola, who won the player of the year award in 1956. Pekka Markkanen and Lauri Markkanen are the only father and son combination to win the award. The most recent player of the year winner is Lauri Markkanen, his sixth win in a row. He is the only Finnish player to be an NBA All Star. Espoon Honka
237px, Petteri Koponen with Espoon Honka in 2007 Espoon Honka, also known as Honka Playboys, was a basketball club based in Espoo, Finland and it played in Korisliiga. The club was dissolved in 2011 due to financial difficulties. History Espoon Honka was founded in 1975 as a professional team apart from Tapiolan Honka, which worked as a feeder team and took responsibility for organizing youth teams and other activities. Espoon Honka played 16 seasons in the Korisliiga and won seven championship titles. Espoon Honka didn't play in the 2011–12 season of Korisliiga due to financial problems and the whole team was then dissolved later that year. Turun NMKY (YMCA Turku) is a Finnish professional basketball club, based in Turku. The club plays in men's I-B-division. History Turun NMKY was founded in 1920. The team has played in a total of 32 through the top league level championships. NMKY has won the championship in Finland and the Finnish Cup, both four times. In the 1996-2000 period the club was also known as ''Piiloset''. In 2000, the Turun NMKY dropped on SM-series due to non-performing debt. After a period of 2007 to 2008 it gave up from the I-division. The rise back to the I-division occurred 2012. However, the team played just one year, I division, and 2014-2015 II-division. Torpan Pojat, shortened to ToPo, is a basketball club based in Helsinki, Finland. Torpan Pojat has their men's and women's team playing in national 1st division and many minor and junior teams in different age categories. History The club was formed in 1932 as a sports club for a school in the neighbourhood of Munkkiniemi in Helsinki. Their men's team played for the first time in the predecessor of Korisliiga in 1956 and continued to play a total of 51 seasons in Korisliiga and seven seasons in lower divisions between 1956 and their dissolution in 2013. The women's team played in the highest tier for the first time in 1962, but never managed to establish itself in the league. Torpan Pojat also played in international competitions. Jorma Kalevi "Pilkku" Pilkevaara (24 October 1945, Helsinki – 12 July 2006, Hamina) was a Finnish professional basketball player. During his playing career, he was listed at 1.88 m (6'2") tall, and 86 kg (190 lbs.). He was elected to the Finnish Basketball Hall of Fame, in 2013. Helsingin Kisa-Toverit (HKT) is a sports club founded in 1929 and based in Finland's capital city of Helsinki. The club have many departments and the strongest have been in basketball, track sports and field games.
