Finnish Athletics Federation
Finnish Athletics Federation ( fi, Suomen Urheiluliitto ry, abbr. SUL; sv, Finlands Friidrottsförbund rf) is the governing body of athletics in Finland. It was separated from the Finnish Gymnastics and Sports Federation in 1932. Today SUL has 850 member clubs and some 30,000 athletes. It is a member of Finnish Sports Federation which is the main governing body of Sport in Finland. Athletics (sport)
Athletics is a group of sporting events that involves competitive running, jumping, throwing, and walking. The most common types of athletics competitions are track and field, road running, cross country running, and racewalking. The results of racing events are decided by finishing position (or time, where measured), while the jumps and throws are won by the athlete that achieves the highest or furthest measurement from a series of attempts. The simplicity of the competitions, and the lack of a need for expensive equipment, makes athletics one of the most common types of sports in the world. Athletics is mostly an individual sport, with the exception of relay races and competitions which combine athletes' performances for a team score, such as cross country. Ilkka Armas Mikael Kanerva (28 January 1948 – 14 April 2022) was a Finnish politician and a member of the Parliament of Finland. He was born in Lokalahti, now a part of Uusikaupunki in Southwest Finland. He was the Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2007 to 2008. Kanerva was a member of the National Coalition Party. With nearly 47 years in office, Kanerva was the longest-serving Member of Parliament in Finnish political history. Yrjö Olavi Samuli Kokko (16 October 1903 in Sortavala – 6 September 1977 in Helsinki) was a Finnish writer and veterinarian. He wrote more than 20 books, among them ''Pessi and Illusia'' (''Pessi ja Illusia'', 1944), ''Singing Swan of fate Bird'' (''Laulujoutsen'', 1954), ''The Way of the Four Winds'' (''Neljän tuulen tie'', 1954) and ''Ungelon Torppa'' (1958). Yrjö Kokko wrote his first book during the heroic Finnish-Russian Winter War, where he volunteered. It is during that time on the war front that he wrote his most famous work ''Pessi and Illusia''.
