Finnbjörn Þorvaldsson
Finnbjörn Þorvaldsson (25 May 1924 – 9 July 2018) was an Icelandic multi-sport athlete who competed in sprinting in the 1948 Summer Olympics. He also won national championships in both handball and basketball with Íþróttafélag Reykjavíkur. Early life Finnbjörn was born in Hnífsdalur, Westfjords. At a young age he moved to Ísafjörður an later to Reykjavík with his parents. Sports career Finnbjörn was best known for his achievements in track and field, especially in sprinting where won several national and nordic championships. He was the flag bearer for Iceland at the 1948 Summer Olympics where he competed in sprinting. He also competed in handball and basketball. He won the Icelandic national championship in handball in 1946 with Íþróttafélag Reykjavíkur after scoring the winning goal in ÍR's 20–19 victory against Haukar. Hnífsdalur
Hnífsdalur () is a small village in the municipality of Ísafjarðarbær, located between Bolungarvík and Ísafjörður. The literal meaning of the name is "Knife's Valley". Some guess that the thin or sharp line of the mountain range resembles that of a knife. No mention is made of the place in the '' Book of Settlement''. ÍR Men's Basketball
The Íþróttafélag Reykjavíkur men's basketball team, commonly known as ÍR, is the men's basketball department of Íþróttafélag Reykjavíkur. It is based in Reykjavík, Iceland and was one of the pioneers of basketball in Iceland and one of the founding members of the men's Úrvalsdeild. From 1954 to 1977, the team won fifteen national championships. In 1964, it became the first Icelandic team to compete in a continental competition when it defeated the Collegians from Belfast, 71-17, in the first round of the 1964–65 FIBA European Champions Cup (now called EuroLeague). History ÍR's men's basketball department was founded in 1949 and its first chairman was Finnbjörn Þorvaldsson.
