Finland Plot
In Thai politics, the Finland Plot, Finland Plan, Finland Strategy, Finland Conspiracy or Finland Declaration ( th, แผนฟินแลนด์, ยุทธศาสตร์ฟินแลนด์, ปฏิญญาฟินแลนด์, fi, Suomi-salaliitto, Suomi-suunnitelma, Suomi-strategia) are names of a controversial conspiracy theory espoused by Sondhi Limthongkul and supporters affiliated with the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) in 2006 describing a plot allegedly developed by Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and former left-wing student leaders to overthrow the former Thai monarch, take control of the nation, and establish a communist state. The plot allegedly originated in Finland. The allegations damaged the popularity of Thaksin and his government, despite the fact that no evidence was ever produced to verify the existence of a plot. The paper is a broadsheet, and emphasizes political and business news. Founded by media-mogul Sondhi Limthongkul, it was an outgrowth of Manager Monthly magazine and Manager Weekly newspaper. The newspaper is popular Thai news source on demonstration against the former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra; its owner is one of the leaders of the People's Alliance for Democracy, or PAD. Democrat Party (Thailand)
The Democrat Party ( th, พรรคประชาธิปัตย์; ) is a Thai political party. The oldest party in Thailand, it was founded as a royalist party, and now upholds a conservative and pro-market position. The Democrat Party made its best showings in parliament in 1948, 1976, and 1996. It has never won an outright parliamentary majority. The party's electoral support bases are southern Thailand and Bangkok, although election results in Bangkok have fluctuated widely. Since 2004, Democrat candidates won three elections for the governorship of Bangkok. From 2005 to 2019, the Democrat Party was led by Abhisit Vejjajiva, former prime minister. Sophon Supapong
Sophon Suphapong ( th, โสภณ สุภาพงษ์) (born, 12 September 1946) is a former Senator for Bangkok in the National Assembly of Thailand and the former President of Bangchak Petroleum. Sophon served as the first president of state-owned Bangchak Petroleum company, which was established in 1984 to operate the Bangchak Refinery. In the 1990s, under his leadership, the company made several initiatives focused on community responsibility as well as environmental awareness, which helped him win the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1998. In 2005, Sophon accused the United States of being the mastermind behind bombings in the South Thailand insurgency. As a Senator, Sophon accused Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra of taking part in the Finland Plan and using gains from the privatization of state energy company PTT in a plan to overthrow the Chakri dynasty and establish a communist dictatorship. Chai-anan Samudavanija
Chai-Anan Samudavanija ( th, ชัยอนันต์ สมุทวณิช; ; 23 February 1944 – 14 September 2018) was a Thai political scientist. He served as director of Vajiravudh College, president of the Royal Institute, judge of the Constitutional Court, and professor of political science at Chulalongkorn University. He was one of the key drafters of the 1997 Constitution of Thailand. During the 2005-2006 political crisis, he was a vocal critic of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. He was associated with Sondhi Limthongkul: he chaired IEC and was head of several of Sondhi's foundations. Chai-Anan supported the 2006 military coup that overthrew the Thaksin government. After gaining the support of the military and 40 provincial millionaires, Chai-Anan helped found the Matchima political party. The Constitution of the Kingdom of Thailand ( th, รัฐธรรมนูญแห่งราชอาณาจักรไทย; ) provides the basis for the rule of law in Thailand. Since the abolition of the absolute monarchy in 1932, Thailand has had 20 charters or constitutions (as of 2015), an average of one roughly every four years. Many changes followed military coups, reflecting the high degree of political instability in the country. After each successful coup, military regimes abrogated the existing constitution, generally without public consultation. The 1997 Constitution of Thailand, often called the "people's constitution", was considered a landmark in terms of the degree of public participation involved in its drafting as well as the democratic nature of its articles. 6 October 1976 Massacre
The 6 October 1976 massacre, or the 6 October event ( th, เหตุการณ์ 6 ตุลา ) as it is known in Thailand, was a violent crackdown by Thai police and lynching by right-wing paramilitaries and bystanders against leftist protesters who had occupied Bangkok's Thammasat University and the adjacent Sanam Luang, on 6 October 1976. Prior to the massacre, thousands of leftists, including students, workers and others, had been holding ongoing demonstrations against the return of former dictator Thanom Kittikachorn to Thailand since mid-September. Official reports state that 46 were killed (on both sides) and 167 were wounded, while unofficial reports state that more than 100 demonstrators were killed. The Communist Party of Thailand ( Abrv: CPT; th, พรรคคอมมิวนิสต์แห่งประเทศไทย, ) was a communist party in Thailand active from 1942 until the 1990s. Initially known as the Communist Party of Siam, the party was founded officially on 1 December 1942, although communist activism in the country began as early as 1927. In the 1960s, the CPT grew in membership and support and by the early 1970s was the second largest communist movement in mainland Southeast Asia (after Vietnam). Sutham Sangprathum ( th, สุธรรม แสงประทุม, born October 26, 1953) is a Thai politician of the Thai Rak Thai Party. He was deputy minister of the Ministry of Interior from 2004 to 2005.
