Fillmore High School
Fillmore High School (FHS) is a public comprehensive high school serving grades 9–12 in Fillmore, California, United States that opened in 1912. It is one of two high schools in the Fillmore Unified School District, the other being Sierra High School, a continuation school. Fillmore High School offers twelve Advanced Placement classes and twelve sports. Athletics Fillmore High School athletic teams are nicknamed the Flashes, and the mascot is Flash Man. The school is a charter member of the Citrus Coast League, a conference within the CIF Southern Section that was established in 2018. Prior to that, Fillmore was part of the Tri-County Athletic Association. Fillmore's main rival is Santa Paula High School. The two schools in the Santa Clara River Valley have one of the oldest continuous high school football rivalries in the state of California, having played each other since 1924 and meeting for the 100th time in 2010. Fillmore, California
Fillmore is a small city in Ventura County, California, United States, in the Santa Clara River Valley. In an agricultural area with rich, fertile soil, Fillmore has a historic downtown that was established when the Southern Pacific built the railroad through the valley in 1887. The rail line also provided a name for the town: J. A. Fillmore was a general superintendent for the company's Pacific system. The population was 16,419 at the 2020 census, up 9.4% from 15,002 during the 2010 census. Advanced Placement (AP) is a program in the United States and Canada created by the College Board which offers college-level curricula and examinations to high school students. American colleges and universities may grant placement and course credit to students who obtain high scores on the examinations. Kevin Frank Gross (born June 8, 1961) is a former Major League Baseball pitcher who played from 1983 through 1997. Gross played for five different teams during his career: the Philadelphia Phillies (1983–1988), Montreal Expos (1989–1990), Los Angeles Dodgers (1991–1994), Texas Rangers (1995–1996), and Anaheim Angels (1997). Dorothy Leland
Dr. Dorothy Leland became the 19th president, and the second female president, of Georgia College & State University on January 1, 2004. She was appointed as the third Chancellor for University of California, Merced, on May 18, 2011, replacing Sung-Mo "Steve" Kang. In 2019 she announced plans to retire. Leland has served on the board of directors of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, Council for Higher Education Accreditation, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and other local and state non-profit organization. Maria Fire
The Maria Fire was a wildfire that burned the south of the community of Santa Paula in the area of Somis, California on the top of South Mountain in Ventura County. The fire ignited in the evening hours of Thursday, October 31, 2019 and consumed well over within its first several hours of burning. Despite the aggressive initial attack by first responders, the fire exploded rapidly due to a strong Santa Ana wind event that was occurring in the area during its ignition.
