Vincent Figgins
Vincent Figgins (1766 – 29 February 1844) was a British typefounder based in London, who cast and sold metal type for printing. After an apprenticeship with typefounder Joseph Jackson, he established his own type foundry in 1792. His company was extremely successful and, with its range of modern serif faces and display typefaces, had a strong influence on the styles of British printing in the nineteenth century. Figgins introduced or popularised both slab-serif and sans-serif typefaces, which have since become two of the main genres of typeface. He was also involved in local politics as a Councilman of the City of London. Family and early life Figgins was born in 1766 and started his career as an apprentice to the typefounder Joseph Jackson. He worked for Jackson from 1782 until Jackson's death in 1792. According to Reed, Figgins was largely the manager of Jackson's foundry from about 1790 onwards due to Jackson's poor health. James Figgins
James Figgins (16 April 1811 – 12 June 1884) was an English Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1868 to 1874. Figgins was the son of Vincent Figgins of Peckham Rye and his wife Elizabeth. He was educated by Dr Brown, of Esher and went into business as a type-founder. He was a J.P. for Middlesex and was Sheriff of London and Middlesex from 1865 to 1866. At the 1868 general election Figgins was elected Member of Parliament for Shrewsbury. He held the seat until 1874. Figgins married Louisa Beckwith, daughter of W. A. Beckwith of Skinner Street, in 1836. Figgins died at the age of 73 and is buried with his father and brother in Nunhead Cemetery Nunhead Cemetery is one of the Magnificent Seven cemeteries in London, England. James Hugh Blair Figgins (8 March 1893 – 27 December 1956) was a Scottish trade unionist. Figgins was born in Largs in Ayrshire, and began working on the railways, initially as a ticket collector, then later as a signalman. Morgan Figgins (born 29 March 1992 in Auckland, New Zealand) is a New Zealand figure skater. She is a five time New Zealand national champion and a four time New Zealand junior national champion. She was the youngest New Zealand skater to skate in the senior division at age 12 when she won her first senior title, and the youngest to skate and obtain the junior title at age 11.
