''Fifty Fathoms Deep'' is a 1931 American pre-Code adventure film directed by Roy William Neill starring Jack Holt, Mary Doran and Richard Cromwell. It was produced and distributed by Columbia Pictures. Synopsis In this high-seas adventure, a woman creates a great rift between old friends: an experienced older diver, and his younger protege. They become enemies when a gold-digger marries the latter. She soon leaves him in favor of a wealthy yachtsman. She is aboard his boat when an accident occurs. The two divers must salvage the costly boat before it sinks. Roy William Neill
Roy William Neill (4 September 1887 – 14 December 1946) was an Irish-born American film director best known for directing the last eleven of the fourteen Sherlock Holmes films starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, made between 1943 and 1946 and released by Universal Studios. Biography With his father as the captain, Roy William Neill was born on a ship off the coast of Ireland. His birth name was Roland de Gostrie. Neill began directing silent films in 1917 and went on to helm 111 films, 55 of them silent. Although most of Neill's films were low-budget B-movies, he was known for directing films with meticulously lit scenes with carefully layered shadows that would become the style of ''film noir'' in the late 1940s. Wallace Archibald MacDonald (5 May 1891 – 30 October 1978) was a Canadian silent film actor and film producer. Biography MacDonald was born in Mulgrave, Nova Scotia, Canada, and attended school in Sydney, Nova Scotia. He started as a messenger boy with the Dominion Steel Company in Sydney, Nova Scotia. He later worked up to teller with the Royal Bank branch in Sydney before the bank transferred him to Vancouver, British Columbia. From there, he moved to California, where he acted on the stage before making inroads into Hollywood. MacDonald started as an actor in films in 1914 and starred in almost 120 motion pictures between then and 1932. He had notable roles in such films as ''Youth's Endearing Charm'' in 1916 working with Mary Miles Minter and Harry von Meter. Dorothy Howell (screenwriter)
Dorothy Howell (May 10, 1899 – June 8, 1971), was an American screenwriter active mostly during the 1920s and 1930s. Born to Elmer Howell and Carrie Lorenz, Dorothy was raised in Illinois alongside her younger brother Raymond. Raymond would go on to work at Hollywood studios as a technician, according to census records. Howell worked as a scenarist and screenwriter for Columbia for much of her career. She started out at Columbia as Harry Cohn's secretary and was appointed assistant general production manager at the company in 1926. Before joining Columbia, she had also worked as a secretary to executives Irving Thalberg and B.P. Schulberg. She was married to Mendel B. Silverberg, a prominent entertainment lawyer (who had previously been married to Alice Calhoun).
