Fiel Van Der Veen
Fiel van der Veen (born 18 February 1945, Nijmegen) is a Dutch illustrator. Career Van der Veen has illustrated books by various Dutch authors, including Paul Biegel, Jan Terlouw and Willem Wilmink. In 1974, Van der Veen illustrated the book ''2 is te veel'' by Henk Barnard, the Kinderboekenweekgeschenk on the occasion of the Boekenweek. Van der Veen also illustrated Paul Biegel's book ''Het eiland daarginds'' which was the Kinderboekenweekgeschenk in 1989. In 1988, van der Veen won the Zilveren Penseel for his illustrations in Paul Biegel's book ''De rode prinses''. Biegel's book ''Laatste verhalen van de eeuw'', also illustrated by van der Veen, won the Woutertje Pieterse Prijs in 2000. Other books by Biegel that were illustrated by van der Veen include ''Japie en het zwarte spook'' (2002), ''Man en muis'' (2003) and ''De roep van de Kinkhoorn'' (2004). The Woutertje Pieterse Prijs (Dutch for Woutertje Pieterse Prize) is an annual Dutch literary award for the best children's book of the preceding year. History The award was first given in 1988. The award is awarded annually in March or April. The award is named after the character Woutertje Pieterse in ''Ideeën'' written by Multatuli. The award's name refers to the character's curiosity and tendency to go against society's morals. In a similar way, the Woutertje Pieterse Prijs is awarded to books that differ from children's literature with a didactic or moralistic nature. Some authors have received the award multiple times, including Toon Tellegen (1992, 1994), Joke van Leeuwen (1997, 1999) and Paul Biegel (1991, 2000). In 2018, Annet Schaap with her book ''Lampje'' was the first author to receive this award with a debut novel. Gouden Griffel
The Gouden Griffel (Golden Stylus) is an award given to authors of children's or teenagers' literature in the Netherlands. History Since 1971, it is awarded each year during the Dutch Children's Books Week, by the Stichting Collectieve Propaganda van het Nederlandse Boek (Dutch Book Promotion Society) for the best children's books written in the past year. Between 1954 and 1970, one book per year was declared the "children's book of the year". Since then, ''griffels'' are awarded in several categories. Only novels written in Dutch are eligible for the ''gouden griffel''. However, the runner-up awards (Silver ''griffels'') can also be given to translated works. Aside from these, the ''Gouden Penseel'' (golden paintbrush) is awarded to the best illustrated children's books (with silver ''penseel'' as a runner-up), and since 1997 the Gouden Zoen (golden kiss, with silver as a runner-up) is awarded to the best books for teenagers. Digital Library For Dutch Literature
The Digital Library for Dutch Literature (Dutch: Digitale Bibliotheek voor de Nederlandse Letteren or DBNL) is a website (showing the abbreviation as dbnl) about Dutch language and Dutch literature. It contains thousands of literary texts, secondary literature and additional information, like biographies, portrayals etcetera, and hyperlinks. The DBNL is an initiative by the DBNL foundation that was founded in 1999 by the Society of Dutch Literature (Dutch: Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde). Building of the DNBL was made possible by donations, among others, from the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research (Dutch: Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek or NWO) and the Nederlandse Taalunie. From 2008 to 2012, the editor was René van Stipriaan. The work is done by eight people in Leiden (as of 2013: The Hague), 20 students, and 50 people in the Philippines who scan and type the texts. In the Netherlands, the Boekenweek (; English: Book Week) is an annual "week" of ten days dedicated to Dutch literature. It has been held in March annually since 1932. Each Boekenweek has a theme. The beginning of the Boekenweek is marked by the ''Boekenbal'' (''book ball''), a gathering that is attended by writers and publishers. Events are held across the country during the Boekenweek, such as book signing sessions, literary festivals and debates. Publications Each year a well-known writer, usually Dutch or Flemish, is asked to write a book, usually a novella, called the ''Boekenweekgeschenk'' (''book week gift''), which is to be given away during the festival.
