Fidus
Fidus was the pseudonym used by German illustrator, painter and publisher Hugo Reinhold Karl Johann Höppener (October 8, 1868 – February 23, 1948). He was a symbolist artist, whose work directly influenced the psychedelic style of graphic design of the late 1960s. Biography Born the son of a confectioner in Lübeck, Höppener demonstrated artistic talent at an early age. Around 1886 he met the "apostle of nature" and artist Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach (1851–1913), and joined Diefenbach's commune near Munich. On Diefenbach's behalf, he served a brief prison sentence for public nudity, earning him the name Fidus ("faithful"). In 1892 he moved to Berlin, set up another commune, and worked as an illustrator on the magazine ''Sphinx''. His work appeared frequently in '' Jugend'' and other illustrated magazines. Light Prayer
''Light Prayer'' (german: Lichtgebet) is a painting associated with the German Youth Movement and ''Lebensreform'' concept of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It portrays a young, naked man who stands on a rock and stretches his arms toward the sky. It was created by the German painter Fidus, who from 1890 to 1938 made eleven versions in various media. In 1913, he created a postcard based on the painting that became widely spread in Germany. Fidus wanted to revitalize society through his paintings and implemented ''Lebensreform'' themes such as naturism, light, nature and vitality. ''Light Prayer'' is in line with the Youth Movement's programme but also became popular among young people who did not associate it with any particular ideology. The situation for Fidushaus today is not a good one. There have been several attempts at restoring it and making it into a museum, none of which have been successful. Though the condition of the house was restored at a price of 1.6 million marks. The building was declared a national monument. There has been some concern about the house attracting Far-Right tourist attention due to Fidus' enrollment in the Nazi Party at one point. Gustav Adolf Franz Brand (14 November 1874 – 2 February 1945) was a German writer, egoist anarchist, and pioneering campaigner for the acceptance of male bisexuality and homosexuality. Early life Adolf Brand was born on 14 November 1874 in Berlin, which was then part of the German Empire. Career He became a school teacher briefly before establishing a publishing firm and producing a German homosexual periodical, ''Der Eigene'' (''The Unique'') in 1896. This was the first ongoing homosexual publication in the world, and ran until 1931. The name was taken from writings of egoist philosopher Max Stirner, who had greatly influenced the young Brand, and refers to Stirner's concept of " self-ownership" of the individual. ''Der Eigene'' was one of the first gay journals in the world, published from 1896 to 1932 by Adolf Brand in Berlin. The German Youth Movement (german: Die deutsche Jugendbewegung) is a collective term for a cultural and educational movement that started in 1896. It consists of numerous associations of young people that focus on outdoor activities. The movement included German Scouting and the Wandervogel. By 1938, 8 million children had joined associations that identified with the movement.
