Alwyn Sheppard Fidler
Alwyn Gwilym Sheppard Fidler CBE (8 May 1909 – 1990) was a Welsh architect and town planner who was chief architect for the new town of Crawley from 1947 to 1952 and was the first person to be appointed City Architect of Birmingham, where he remained from 1952 to 1964. Life Alwyn Gwilym Sheppard Fidler was born in Holywell, Flintshire on 8 May 1909. His father, William Ernest Fidler was a schoolteacher and his mother was Phoebe Maud, née Williams. He attended Holywell grammar school as a child. In 1927 he studied architecture under Charles Reilly and Patrick Abercrombie at the University of Liverpool. Fidler married Margaret Isabella Kidner on 1 January 1936 at St Bride’s Parish Church, Liverpool. They had a son together. Fidler was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1963. He died on 4 January 1990 of a cardiovascular disease. Fidler was Member of Parliament (MP) for Bury and Radcliffe from 1970 until the October 1974 general election, when he lost his seat to Labour's Frank White. Lake Fidler is a meromictic lake beside the Gordon River in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Site area of the west coast of Tasmania, Australia. The lake has a layer of fresh water overlying an anoxic salt water layer. The meromictic lakes and ponds of the Gordon River were discovered by D. A. Hodgson and Professor Peter Tyler. Description It became evident that, following the establishment of a hydro-electric power industry on the Gordon River, the flows of fresh water into the lake were disturbed and the anoxic salt layer was declining in depth. Previously, low river flows at certain times of the year allowed salt water to migrate upriver and occasionally spill into Lake Fidler through a narrow channel joining it to the river, thus recharging the salt water layer. Fidler's Mill
Fidler's Mill is a historic grist mill located at Arlington, Upshur County, West Virginia. It was built in 1847-1849 and enlarged in 1916. It is a two to four story frame building built of yellow poplar on a stone foundation. The mill provided ground wheat and buckwheat for flour, and ground cornmeal, and also housed wool carding machines, which were used seasonally. Both mill and town were named for Alfious Arlington Fidler, proprietor. Peter Fidler (16 August 1769 – 17 December 1822) was a Kingdom of Great Britain, British surveying, surveyor, cartographer, map-maker, fur trader and explorer who had a long career in the employ of the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) in what later became Canada. He was born in Bolsover, Derbyshire, England and died at Fort Dauphin (Canada), Fort Dauphin in present-day Manitoba. He married Mary (Methwewin) Mackagonne, a Cree woman, and together they had 14 children. Career Fidler joined the Hudson's Bay Company as a labourer at London and took up his post at York Factory in 1788. He was promoted to clerk and posted to Manchester House and South Branch House in what later became Saskatchewan within his first year. Peter David Fidler is a dobro player from Melbourne, Australia. He also plays mandolin, lap steel guitar and guitar. Before playing the dobro, Fidler was guitarist/songwriter in Melbourne-based psychedelic rock band, Tyrnaround. Tyrnaround were formed in 1985 and active until the death of their singer, Michael Philips, in 1999. Fidler wrote one of their best known songs "Colour Your Mind" which was released in 1986. Jim Fidler (born in the 1960s in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania) is a singer, producer, and musician living in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Biography In the 1960s, Jim and his mother relocated to Newfoundland where he grew up in the diverse Rabbittown section of St. John's. As a youth, Fidler spent a great deal of time along Conception Bay, where he developed an appreciation for Newfoundland's music and culture. Fidler's family found that, as a child, he frequently picked up instruments and mastered them with ease. Blind since age 9, he continued to develop his talents. By the age of 10, he had formed his own band with friends.
