Alexander Erskine Fiddes (2 January 1914 – 1998) was a Scottish rugby union and professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1930s and 1940s, and coached rugby league in the 1940s and 1950s. He played club level rugby union (RU) for Hawick RFC, and representative level rugby league (RL) for British Empire XIII, and at club level for Huddersfield (captain) and Castleford, as a , and coached club level rugby league (RL) for Huddersfield and Batley. Christopher John Ellis Fiddes (born Northampton 13 November 1934) is an English artist, muralist, designer of stained glass and book illustrator. He is also an expert art historian. He has enjoyed a long career as an artist, with prodigious output and driven by a strong belief in the value of traditional drawing and painting techniques that he feels have been largely lost in Post-Modern art movements and the 21st-century commercial art world. Education and teaching career Fiddes studied art at Northampton Art School from 1950 to 1954 and then gained an Art Teacher's Diploma at Leicester University. He did two years' Conscription in the United Kingdom, National Service in the Northamptonshire Regiment of the British Army and spent time in Hong Kong. Sir George Vandeleur Fiddes, (4 September 1858 – 22 December 1936) was the British Permanent Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies. Early life George Vandeleur Fiddes was born in Great Yarmouth, the son of George Richard Fiddes and Ellen Greening. He was educated at Dulwich College, his grandmother Jane Greening being a pensioner of the Dulwich College Estate when he was 12 and with whom he was living along with his mother Ellen in 1871. He was subsequently a scholar of Brasenose College, Oxford where he took a second-class in Classical Moderations in 1879. Career Fiddes entered the Colonial Office in 1881. He was promoted First Class Clerk, after long service as private secretary, in 1896. He went on to be appointed as Imperial Secretary and Accountant to Sir Alfred Milner, High Commissioner for South Africa, in 1897. Fiddes Castle
The Castle of Fiddes is a 16th-century tower house in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, located around south-west of Stonehaven. It is dated 1592 on a window lintel, with a later date of 1673 on the east wall suggesting a renovation at this time. It was the property of the Arbuthnott family, who sold it in the later 17th century to the Thomson family of Arduthie. It was modernised around 1930 and remains occupied. It is a category A listed building. The four-storey tower is built on an unusual variant of the L-plan, with a large circular stair tower and several projecting turrets supported on corbels. Richard Fiddes
Richard Fiddes (1671–1725) was an English Anglican priest and historian. Life He was born at Hunmanby and educated at Oxford University. He took orders, and obtained the living of Halsham in Holderness in 1696. Owing to ill-health he applied for leave to reside at Wickham near Scarborough, North Yorkshire, and in 1712 he removed to London on the plea of poverty, intending to pursue a literary career. In London he met Jonathan Swift, who procured him a chaplaincy at Hull. He also became chaplain to the earl of Oxford. After losing the Hull chaplaincy through a change of ministry in 1714, he devoted himself to writing. His best book is a ''Life of Cardinal Wolsey'' (London, 1724), containing documents which are still valuable for reference; of his other writings the ''Prefatory Epistle'' containing some remarks to be published on Homer's ''Iliad'' (London, 1714), was occasioned by Alexander Pope's proposed translation of the ''Iliad'', and his ''Theologia speculativa'' (London, ...
