Fia Backström
Fia Backström (born 1970) is a Swedish artist, writer and educator known for her multidisciplinary artworks. Backström lives and works in New York City. Career Backström's art practice is embraces both relational and conceptual art. Her output ranges between the production of events, exhibitions, magazine ads, posters, and conversations. In 2005 Backström staged the exhibition ''lesser new york'' in response to the MoMA PS1 MoMA exhibition ''Greater New York''. The salon des refusés style exhibition would later be shown as part of the official ''Greater New York'' exhibition at MoMa PS1. In 2011 she represented Sweden in the Venice Biennale. Backström's work is included in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the RISD Museum and the Moderna Museet Moderna Museet ("the Museum of Modern Art"), Stockholm, Sweden, is a state museum for modern and contemporary art located on the island of Skeppsholmen in central Stockholm, opened in 1958. Relational Art
Relational art or relational aesthetics is a mode or tendency in fine art practice originally observed and highlighted by French art critic Nicolas Bourriaud. Bourriaud defined the approach as "a set of artistic practices which take as their theoretical and practical point of departure the whole of human relations and their social context, rather than an independent and private space." The artist can be more accurately viewed as the "catalyst" in relational art, rather than being at the centre. Etymology One of the first attempts to analyze and categorize art from the 1990s, the idea of relational art was developed by Nicolas Bourriaud in 1998 in his book ''Esthétique relationnelle'' (''Relational Aesthetics''). Conceptual Art
Conceptual art, also referred to as conceptualism, is art in which the concept(s) or idea(s) involved in the work take precedence over traditional aesthetic, technical, and material concerns. Some works of conceptual art, sometimes called installations, may be constructed by anyone simply by following a set of written instructions.
