Dunedin ( ; mi, Ōtepoti) is the second-largest city in the South Island of New Zealand (after Christchurch), and the principal city of the Otago region. Cuba Street Carnival
The Cuba Street Carnival was a street parade and creative celebration in Cuba Street, Wellington, New Zealand that was intermittently held from the 1980s and saw crowds of 10,000 - 20,000 people. It stopped in 2009 due to a lack of funding, and was revived in 2015 under the name Cubadupa. History The Carnival was originated and was run many times in Upper Cuba Street by Martin Wilson through the 1980s and in 1995. Another was held on 7 and 8 December 1991 including the Whirling Circus. and another in 1993. Chris Morley-Hall re-launched the carnival in 1998. The festival involves hundreds of artists, performers, street buskers, a night street parade, and a street market. The Carnival was inspired by the Notting Hill Carnival and other raucous street parades and fairs. While it ran, it attracted crowds of approximately 10,000 to 20,000 people. Couch Soup
Couch Soup was a mini-festival of one page plays which started in 1997 and ran annually in Hamilton, New Zealand, and in 2007 in Wellington as part of the New Zealand Fringe Festival. Plays were selected via an open call for scripts, and performed with minimal props, costumes and set (the couch). The format followed in the festivals was around 30 one page plays, performed by four actors (two male, two female), with a run time of approximately an hour. Though the plays are limited to one side of an A4 page, no restrictions are placed on the format used, and plays may vary from under thirty seconds to over two minutes in length, with the average being around a minute per play. Christmas in the Park is the title given to annual free music concerts held in cities across New Zealand during the Christmas season. Balloons Over Waikato
Balloons over Waikato is an annual hot air balloon festival held in Hamilton, New Zealand since 1999 by the non-profit organization Balloons over Waikato Trust. The event spans five days during autumn and attracts both local and overseas balloonists. The Festival is held primarily at Innes Common, at Lake Rotoroa (Hamilton, New Zealand), Hamilton Lake, which gets an estimated 130,000 visitors during the festival. The highlight of the festival, the "Balloon glow, Night glow" is held at the University of Waikato where an estimated 80,000+ people attend to watch the lighting of balloons putting on a spectacular glow to music. Auckland Easter Show
The Royal Easter Show is an event held annually during Easter in Auckland, New Zealand. It was first held in 1843 and since then has included agricultural events, art exhibitions, live entertainment, sporting events, rides, sideshows, a marketplace and circuses. The show is held at the Epsom Showgrounds in Epsom. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in New Zealand, the show was not held in 2020 or 2021. History The Royal Easter Show was first held in 1843. In 2013, the show featured the largest ferris wheel in Auckland's history. The free event in 2014 attracted more than 130,000 attendees. In 2016, hundreds of people claimed that they would boycott the show after pictures of injured animals were shared. Armageddon (convention)
Armageddon Expo is a New Zealand owned and operated pop culture convention that holds multiple events around New Zealand in cities including Auckland, Wellington, Tauranga and Christchurch. The event, run by Beyond Reality Media Premier Event Management, has been running continuously since 1995. It has evolved from its roots of comics and trading cards to showcase computer and video gaming, animation, film and television, cosplay, comics, live wrestling, and retailers selling pop-culture merchandise. The convention hosts celebrity guests from the worlds of movies, TV shows, animation, cosplay, YouTube, comics and gaming. Alpine Unity
Alpine Unity was a three night New Year festival in New Zealand. The first event took place in 2001 with two subsequent events taking place at Flock Hill, a high country station in the South Island. The largest event in 2002 had approximately 5000 attendees. It was run as a limited liability company co-owned by Pacific Island Entertainment Ltd. and Middle Earth Productions Ltd., until two of the Directors of the company and the festival were implicated in a drug bust in 2003. Following the bust, the party was taken over by New Zealand Entertainment Service Ltd. and rebranded 'Alpine'. It carried on under the new name, eventually being superseded by Rhythm and Alps, which was created by the organisers of the Rhythm and Vines New Year festival in the North Island. Alexandra Blossom Festival
The Alexandra Blossom Festival is an annual event that is held for 17 days each September in Alexandra, New Zealand that celebrates the advent of Spring. The Festival is the longest-running community event of its kind in New Zealand. History The first blossom festival began on Friday, 27 September 1957 and the first attraction was the Horticultural Society's spring flower show. The next day saw the climax of the festival, as the frequently termed "big day" was held then. It was then that the now famous parade of floats first took place and they showcased themselves by moving along the main street of Alexandra. There was also entertainment during and after the parade at Alexandra's Pioneer Park.
