Festival Of Code
Rewired State was an organisation which ran a series of hack days for programmers and designers, focused on improving access to UK government open data and encouraging innovation in government services. Rewired State was founded by James Darling, Emma Mulqueeny, and Richard Pope in 2008. The first event, ''National Hack the Government Day'', was held on 7 March 2009 at the ''Guardian'' offices in King's Cross, London. Over 80 people attended producing over 30 hacks. Judges at Rewired State events included Tom Watson MP and Dr Sue Black. Sponsors included the Government Digital Service, mySociety, and Nesta. National Hack the Government Day ran annually until 2015. Emma Mulqueeny
Emma Elizabeth Mulqueeny (Given name, née Knight; born 12 July 1971) is a British technologist and educator. She is best known for co-founding Rewired State and Young Rewired State, which provided a community and events for technically gifted young people. She has campaigned for programming to be taught from an early age in UK schools to encourage wider uptake and increased diversity in the tech sector. Early life and education Mulqueeny was born as the daughter of Kenneth G Knight and Sara Nicholls (Given name, née McArtney). Career Mulqueeny served on the Speaker of the House of Commons (United Kingdom), House of Commons' Speaker's Commission on E-democracy, Digital Democracy and was a 2014 Google Personal Democracy Fellow. A hackathon (also known as a hack day, hackfest, datathon or codefest; a portmanteau of hacking and marathon) is an event where people engage in rapid and collaborative engineering over a relatively short period of time such as 24 or 48 hours. Susan Elizabeth Black (born 1962) is a British computer scientist, academic and social entrepreneur. She is known for saving Bletchley Park, (World War II codebreaking) with her ''Saving Bletchley Park'' campaign. Since 2018, she has been Professor of Computer Science and Technology Evangelist at Durham University. She was previously based at the University of Westminster and University College London. The Government Digital Service is a unit of the Government of the United Kingdom's Cabinet Office tasked with transforming the provision of online public services. It was formed in April 2011 to implement the "Digital by Default" strategy proposed by a report produced for the Cabinet Office in 2010 called 'Directgov 2010 and beyond: revolution not evolution'. MySociety
mySociety is a UK-based registered charity, previously named UK Citizens Online Democracy. It began as a UK-focused organisation with the aim of making online democracy tools for UK citizens. However, those tools were open source, so that the code could be (and soon was) redeployed in other countries. mySociety went on to simplify and internationalise its code and through the now dormant Poplus project, encouraged others to share open source code that would minimise the amount of duplication in civic tech coding.
