Ballet Rhode Island (Ballet RI), formerly known as "Festival Ballet Providence", is a ballet company located in Providence, Rhode Island, United States. Ballet RI performs at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium, Moses Brown School's Woodman Center, and their own Black Box Theatre. History The company was founded in 1978 by Christine Hennessey and Winthrop Corey (1945-2023), former principal dancers with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. After the death of Hennessey in 1998, Mihailo Djuric took over as Artistic Director, and led the company until 2020. Kathleen Breen Combes has been Director since 2021. Kathleen Breen Combes
Kathleen Breen Combes is an American ballet dancer. She was a principal dancer with the Boston Ballet until 2019, when she retired to join Festival Ballet Providence as executive director. Early life Breen Combes was born in Rockville Centre, New York. She is of Irish ancestry. She trained in ballet at Fort Lauderdale Ballet Classique, the Harid Conservatory, and The Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet. The daughter of a Pilates instructor, she became certified in Pilates when she was nineteen years old. Career Breen Combes joined The Washington Ballet as an apprentice in 2000 and became a member of main company in 2002. She joined Boston Ballet in 2003. Veterans Memorial Auditorium (Providence, Rhode Island)
Veterans Memorial Auditorium (The VETS; formerly VMA) is a performing arts theater in Providence, Rhode Island. Construction began in 1928 but was delayed by the Great Depression. The theater was finally completed in 1950. The adjacent Performing Arts Complex was erected in 1970 and is partially owned by the Veterans' Memorial Foundation. A 1940 article on the venue noted that, "of the 26 fires that have occurred at The Vets, a majority of them occurred inside the building and remained completely unscathed." According to the article, the fire marshal has noted that fire remains the main cause of the building's failure. The article also mentions that the Vets has run into problems with electricity, trash, graffiti. Noted local architect Oresto DiSaia was given the contract to plan the completion. Moses Brown School
Moses Brown School is an independent Quaker school located in Providence, Rhode Island, offering pre-kindergarten through secondary school classes. It was founded in 1784 by Moses Brown, a Quaker abolitionist, and is one of the oldest preparatory schools in the country. Royal Winnipeg Ballet
The Royal Winnipeg Ballet is Canada's oldest ballet company and the longest continuously operating ballet company in North America. Sarah Lane
Sarah Lane (born August 3, 1984) is an American ballet dancer who was a principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre (ABT). She served as a "dance double" for Natalie Portman in the 2010 film ''Black Swan''. Early life Lane was born in San Francisco, California. She started training for dance at Classical Ballet Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee. Her family later moved to Rochester, New York where she continued her training at the Draper Center for Dance Education. At the age of 16 she attended the Boston Ballet's Summer Program on a full scholarship.
