Ferrybank GAA
Ferrybank GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club based in Waterford City, Republic of Ireland. It is situated in the suburb of Ferrybank on the north bank of the River Suir. There have been Gaelic games played in Ferrybank since the first team known as the Davis's was formed in the early 1890s. The club, under its present guise, was formed in 1950, and celebrated its 50th anniversary in the year 2000. The club caters for boys and girls from the age of 5 years and upwards. At juvenile level, the club were U-14 and U-16 County Champions in hurling in 2007 and teams are fielded at all juvenile grades. At adult level in hurling, the club fields teams at senior and junior levels. In Gaelic football, the club were Waterford Junior Champions in 2007. Ferrybank, Waterford
Ferrybank () is a suburb of Waterford, Waterford City in Republic of Ireland, Ireland. Much of Ferrybank, or "the village" as it is referred to locally, is under the political jurisdiction of Waterford City and County Council and thus an area of administration for Waterford City, on the northern bank of the River Suir, extending into County Waterford. However, some parts of Ferrybank extend into County Kilkenny and are administered by Kilkenny County Council. There has been a long lasting boundary dispute between both jurisdictions, with debates and proposals ongoing for many decades. Hurling
Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. Waterford Senior Hurling Championship
The Waterford Senior Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the JJ Kavanagh & Sons Senior Hurling Championship) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Waterford County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1897 for the top hurling teams in the county of Waterford in Ireland. The series of games are played during the spring, summer and autumn months with the county final currently being played at Walsh Park in October. Initially played as a knock-out competition, the championship currently features a group stage followed by a knock-out stage. Waterford Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship
The Waterford Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship (abbreviated to the Waterford PIHC) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Waterford County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association and contested by the top-ranking intermediate clubs in the county of Waterford in Ireland. It is the second tier overall in the entire Waterford hurling championship system. The Waterford Premier Intermediate Championship was introduced in 2023 following a restructuring of the intermediate championship. In its current format, the championship begins in mid summer. The eight participating teams are drawn into two groups of four teams and play each other in a round-robin system. The 2023 Waterford Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship was the inaugural staging of the Waterford Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Waterford County Board. The draw for the group stage placing took place on 7 February 2023. The championship ran from 28 July to 9 September 2023. The final was played on 9 September 2023 at Walsh Park in Waterford, between Ferrybank and Cappoquin, in what was their first ever meeting in the final.
