Bran Ferren (born January 16, 1953), is an American technologist, artist, architectural designer, vehicle designer, engineer, lighting and sound designer, visual effects artist, scientist, lecturer, photographer, entrepreneur, and inventor. Ferren is the former President of Research and Development of Walt Disney Imagineering as well as founder of Associates & Ferren, a multidisciplinary engineering and design firm acquired in 1993 by Disney. He is Chief Creative Officer of Applied Minds, which he co-founded in 2000 with Danny Hillis. Apple's " pinch-to-zoom" patent, which features prominently in its legal battle with Samsung, was invalidated by the US Patent and Trademark Office in 2013 based on a 2005 patent by Ferren and Hillis for multi-touch gestures. John Ferren
John Millard Ferren (October 17, 1905 – July 1, 1970) was an American artist and educator. He was active from 1920 until 1970 in San Francisco, Paris and New York City. Early life John Ferren was born in Pendleton, Oregon on October 17, 1905, on the Blackfoot Indian Reservation. His parents were Verna Zay (née Westfall) and James William Ferren, his father served in the Army and the family moved often. In 1911, the family settled down in San Francisco, California. In 1925, he briefly attended the California School of Fine Arts (now known as San Francisco Art Institute). In his 20s, he apprenticed as a stonecutter in San Francisco and producing portrait busts. Carlyle Ferren MacIntyre (July 16, 1890 - June 30, 1967) is an American poet, known for his poetry and translations of Baudelaire, Verlaine, George, Goethe and Rilke. His work appeared in ''The Nation'', and ''Harper's''. Biography He was born on July 16, 1890 in Des Moines, Iowa. He graduated from University of Southern California, and received his doctorate in Marburg, Germany. He taught at Los Angeles Polytechnic High School, Occidental College in Los Angeles, University of California, Los Angeles, and University of California, Berkeley. He spent 1938 in Europe on a Guggenheim Fellowship, working on a translation of Goethe's ''Faust''. A book of poems, ''Cafés and Cathedrals'' ensued and was published in 1939. ''Faust Part 1'' appeared in 1941, but publication negotiations for Part 2 collapsed, and the manuscript remains in a box at UCLA's Young Research Library. Charles Ferren Hopkins
Charles Ferren Hopkins Sr. (May 16, 1842 – February 14, 1934) was the last surviving Union Civil War soldier in New Jersey that was a recipient of the Medal of Honor. He served as Mayor of Boonton, New Jersey. Biography He was born on May 16, 1842, in Hope Township, New Jersey to Nathan Hopkins (1811–1889) and Ann Wilson and he had a brother, John Robertson Hopkins (1844–1885). He served as Mayor of Boonton, New Jersey. He was married in about 1867; his wife died in 1931. Four daughters survived him, and three sons: Emmet, Frank, and Charles Ferren Hopkins Jr. (1884–1956).
